Glimpse of Azores
“I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world” -Mary Anne Radmacher
There simply is no way to tour Europe & not be awestruck by its natural beauty, epic history, dazzling artistic & culinary diversity. From soaring mountains to golden sands, Europee reveals a tapestry of quaint & contemporary cultures - always with enough rough edges to keep you intrigued. Europe’s almost unmanageable wealth of attractions is its biggest single draw: the birthplace of democracy in Athens, the Renaissance art of Florence, the graceful Canals of Venice, the Napoleonic splendour of Paris, and the multilayered historical & cultural canvas of London. Less obvious, but no less impressive attractions include Moorish palaces in Andalucia, the remains of one of the Seven Wonders of the World in Turkey, the majesty of meticulously restored imperial Palaces in Russia's former Capital St Petersburg & the ongoing project of Gaudi's La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. An intricate jigsaw of Landscapes, Cultures, Histories, Aart, Architecture & Cuisines, Europe retains time-honoured Traditions while constantly evolving to incorporate inspired new Trends.
Then, there is Portugal – -with its beautiful medieval Castles, cobblestone Villages, captivating Cities & golden Beaches. Celts, Romans, Visigoths, Moors & Christians all left their mark on the Iberian nation. Here, you can gaze upon 20,000 year old stone carvings in the Vila Nova de Foz Coa, watch the sunset over mysterious megaliths outside Evora or lose yourself in the elaborate corridors of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Tomar, Belem, Alcobaça or Batalha. You can ponder the rise & fall of ancient Civilisations in the Celtic Citania de Briteiros or the ancient Roman Cidade de Ammaia, & explore Portugal's most enchanting settings in Palaces set above mist-covered woodlands, craggy clifftop Castles & stunningly preserved medieval Town Centres.
Europe’s almost unmanageable wealth of attractions is its biggest single draw. Despite its population density Europe maintains spectacular natural scenery: rugged Scottish Highlands with Glens & Lochs; Norway's fabulous Fjords, seemingly chipped to jagged perfection by giants; the vine-raked Valleys of the Loire; and the steppe-like plains of central Spain. & mesmerizing beauty of Azores in Portugal.
Looking for Beaches, a circuit of the Mediterranean's northern coast reveals one gem after another. Or strike out to lesser known, yet beautiful coastal regions such as the Baltic & Black Seas. Mountain lovers should head to the Alps marching across central Europe taking in France, Switzerland, Austria, northern Italy & tiny Liechtenstein.
Cheers! Salud! Prost! Cin cin! A votre sante! Europe has some of the best Nightlife in the world. Globally famous DJs keep the party going in London, Berlin & Paris, all of which also offer top-class entertainment, especially Theatre and live Music. Other key locations for high-energy Nightlife include Moscow, Belgrade, Budapest & Madrid, while those hankering for something cosier can add Dublin's Pubs or Vienna's Cafes to their itinerary.
From the thrill of fresh powder on the mountain top to the peace of a twilight stroll through a gorgeous medieval town, Europe is a place that stimulates your sense of curiosity. Through shared history, cultural diversity & natural beauty, this Continent, where travel is free-flowing & adventures are limitless, inspires connections, experiences & memories that stretch beyond borders. Whether you wish for the serenity of a quiet trip in the countryside or the excitement of a multiplicity of Festivals, from Parades attended by thousands to Concerts in an ancient Amphitheatre, it is all here in Europe, waiting just for you.
And then, there is Portugal – with its beautiful medieval Castles, cobblestone villages, captivating cities & golden beaches.
Riveting History| Dramatic Landscapes | Cultural Experiences
Portugal commanding a long Mediterranean coastline, has left a powerful mark on Western culture. Full of surprises, you will never tire of exploring this small but endlessly fascinating country.
Enamoured by the scenery, the old-fashioned traditions of village life and Portugal's outstanding, very affordable seafood, you will love taking in the stunning views along the coast, going for mountain Treks & bumping into Shepherds in the Serra da Estrela & wandering the pretty towns of the Minho.
Celts, Romans, Visigoths, Moors & Christians all left their mark on the Iberian nation. Here, you can gaze upon 20,000 year old stone carvings in the Vila Nova de Foz Coa, watch the sunset over mysterious megaliths outside Évora or lose yourself in the elaborate corridors of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Tomar, Belem, Alcobaça or Batalha. Its capital, Lisbon is a sprawling, cosmopolitan city with nearly 3,000 years of globally influential Art, Architecture & Culture on display.
Festivals pack Portugal’s calendar. Drink, dance & feast your way through all-night revelries like Lisbon’s Festa de Santo Antonio or Porto’s Festa de Sao Joao. There are kick-up-your-heels country Fairs in the hinterlands, and rock & world-music fests all along the coast. Any time of year is right to hear the mournful music of fado in the Alfama, join the dance party in Bairro Alto or hit the Bars in Porto, Coimbra & Lagos. Rural Portugal has its own age-old musical traditions, from the polyphonic cante Alentejana in the Alentejo to the Pauliteiros (stick dancers) of Miranda do Douro.
Freshly baked bread, olives, cheese, red wine or crisp vinho verde, chargrilled fish, cataplana (seafood stew), smoked meats - the Portuguese have perfected the art of cooking simple, delicious meals. Sitting down to table means experiencing the richness of Portugal’s bountiful coastline & fertile countryside. Of course, you don’t have to sit, you can take your piping-hot pastel de nata (custard tart) standing up at an 1837 patisserie in Belem, or wander through scenic vineyards sipping the velvety ports of the Douro valley. You can shop the produce-filled markets, or book a table in one of the country’s top dining rooms.
Portugal is a country steeped in history & this is reflected in its old churches & other finely crafted buildings.
Outside the cities, Portugal’s beauty unfolds in all its startling variety. You can go hiking amid the granite peaks of Parque Nacional da Peneda-Geres or take in the pristine scenery & historic villages of the little-explored Beiras. Over 800 km of coast offers more places to soak up the splendour. Gaze out over dramatic end-of-the-world cliffs, surf stellar breaks off dune-covered Beaches or laze peacefully on sandy Islands fronting calm blue seas. You will find Dolphin watching in the lush Sado Estuary, Boating & Kayaking along the meandering Rio Guadiana, and memorable walks & bike rides all across the country.
From across the Rio Douro at sunset, romantic Porto, the country’s 2nd largest city, looks like a pop-up town. A colourful tumbledown dream with medieval Relics, soaring Bell Towers, extravagant baroque Churches & stately beaux-arts buildings piled on top of one another, illuminated by streaming shafts of sun. If you squint you might be able to make out the open windows, the narrow lanes & staircases zigzagging to nowhere.
Taste the numerous choices of delicious wines while on cellar tours in the Port Wine Region, which was established in 1756 in the beautiful Douro Valley.
If you wish to experience Portugal’s highlights without driving, then we have short tours for you! Take the Train & get to know the most interesting historical sites, the best cultural locations, the most important cities & the fantastic, quaint towns & villages along the way. Hop on & off the most beautiful Train rides with our help & full support all the time. When in Portugal, be a Portuguese!

The Azores are Islands of unique beauty & the mild, temperate climate gives the region a year-round appeal, especially for aficionados of active Nature & Active vacations, thanks to the numerous Trekking routes & Marine sports. Beach bums & Ocean lovers are pleasantly surprised by the Islands’ gorgeous black sand Beaches, natural Ocean Pools & world-class Diving - not to mention Dolphin, Turtle & Whale watching. Hyper-focused on sustainability & preservation, the Azoreans appreciate & respect the nature of the Islands & want to preserve them just as much as they want to proudly share them with the world.
So, if world-class Whale watching, Thermal Springs, endless hiking Trails, adrenaline-inducing outdoor activities, delicious Food & Wine, interesting history & friendly locals sound appealing, then Azores awaits you.
The Archipelago encompasses 9 volcanic Islands: Sao Miguel, Terceira, Sao Jorge, Pico, Faial, Flores, Graciosa, Corvo & Santa Maria.
Sao Miguel is the largest & most visited Island & certainly the main Gateway, thanks to the highest number of air connections. Nicknamed "The Green Island" (Ilha Verde), it was the 2nd Island to be discovered by Gonçalo Velho Cabral & settled by Colonists from continental Portugal around 1427. Picturesque Villages & historic Towns line the steep, rocky coasts of the Island. Some beautiful sandy Coves can be found along the gentler southern coast.
The Capital & gateway to Azores & Sao Miguel Island is the charming coastal city of Ponta Delgada.
Located in the historical centre with artistically designed patterned Footpaths, is a mix of landmarks. Portas da Cidade de Ponta Delgada (City Gates) date back to 1783 & are the City’s postcard monument. Next to the Gates, is the beautiful 16th century gothic style whitewashed Igreja Matriz da Sao Sebastiao Church with its impressive facade built in Portuguese Manueline style. Forte de Sao Bras (Fort Bras), is the most important historical landmark on the Island. This Fortress once protected the Island from Pirates & Privateers. Today, it is the headquarters of the Military Command of the Azores & also hosts the Military Museum. On a hill above the City, sits the Hermitage of the Mother of God Church & this hilltop terrace gives 360 degree views over the City, making it the perfect spot to watch the Sunrise.
No trip to Sao Miguel Island would be complete without eating an Azorean Pineapple, made famous for being the only place in the world where Pineapples are grown in Greenhouses in over 6,000 Plantations on the Island. Just outside the City is the famous Arruda Pineapple Plantation, the only one that is open to the public. Wander around the grounds & see the various stages of the Pineapple’s lifecycle before trying some homemade Pineapple ice-cream in the outdoor Cafe.
Geo-tourism is the major drawcard to Sao Miguel Island which showcases a remarkable geo-diversity that is closely linked to the volcanic nature of the Islands. Volcanoes, Calderas, Crater Lakes, Fumaroles, Hot Springs, volcanic Caves & Grottos, are the essence of what makes this Island so special & internationally known.
Activities include exploring the Island’s volcanic landscapes, Caves & geo-sites, Biking, walking, Canyoning, Paragliding & of course, enjoying the Bath in natural Thermal pools. Not to mention the plethora of Viewpoints scattered throughout the Island & along its coast.
Famous for its volcanic landscape peppered with bubbling Geysers, lush colourful landscapes with rolling, verdant hillsides & rich Marine life, the Island's highlights also include the twin crater Lakes.
The picture perfect Sete Cidades, literally meaning, ‘7 cities’, is one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal. At its centre are the green Sete Cidades to the northwest & to the east, is blue coloured Furnas, with Fumaroles & Hot Springs. According to legend, the Lakes were formed from the tears of a Shepherd & a Princess who shared a forbidden love.
View of these Lakes can be enjoyed from the Vista do Rei (King’s View) Lookout, which was named after King D. Carlos and Queen D. Amelia to celebrate their visit to the Island in 1901.
Just as Sao Miguel has a must-see Sunrise spot, it has a couple of equally stunning Sunset locations. Sete Cidades is an absolute delight during Sunset, as the sky fills the landscape with pink & purple hues. And there is no better way to end your day in Sao Miguel than by heading to Mosteiros to watch the Sunset. Located just offshore, the sun dips behind 2 large boulders, creating an impressive effect under a magenta sky.
From stunning views to volcanic landscapes, see bubbling Geysers & smoking Fumaroles at Caldeiras das Furnas & Furnas Lake, one of Sao Miguel main lagoons, located in a dormant volcanic crater.
No visit to Furnas would be complete without experiencing a meal cooked by Mother Nature herself. The hot springs of the Caldeira are used by locals to cook a traditional stew known as Cozido das Furnas (Furnas stew). From here, it is transported to local Restaurants ready for hungry customers to enjoy.
There are numerous swimming opportunities in Sao Miguel, but nothing quite as special as bathing in Ponta da Ferraria geothermal Spring. Located at the base of a giant lava rock cliff, this natural spring flows into the Atlantic ocean, creating a wonderful mixture of warm & cool water. This unique bathing site with its therapeutic water Spring has been in use since the 15th century.
Poça da D. Beija Thermal Spa features 5 outdoor Pools at various temperatures offering a wonderfully authentic experience.
Overnight.
Day 02 - | Ponta Delgada
Morning, meet the Tour-guide in the Lobby at 09.00 am & embark on a full day sightseeing of the enchanting city.
First stop will be at the to see the Island’s premier fruit. Wander around the grounds & see the various stages of the Pineapple’s lifecycle before trying some homemade Pineapple ice-cream or taste the ‘pineapple’ liqueur, in the outdoor Cafe.
Continue towards the 2,600 feet high Pico do Carvao Viewpoint, located in the parish of Arrifes, in Ponta Delgada. It offers splendid views of the Atlantic Ocean & Sao Miguel’s central part & north & south coasts, as well as surrounding lakes, including Lago Carvao, Lago Canario & ago Rasa. The area is very green & full of Japanese Cedars & Fern trees.
You can also see a vast expanse of volcanic Cones that stretch from the Municipality of Ponta Delgada to the Municipality of Ribeira Grande, always with several Lagoons as a backdrop.
It is possible to see Pico da Vara (the highest point on the Island), Volcao do Fogo, Serra Gorda & other places.
Please note that due to its elevated location, it is generally very windy at the top, so ensure that you bring a jacket. The relatively short Trail leading to the Viewpoint can be steep & slippery, so ensure that you wear hiking shoes with good grip.
After spending time here, drive on to the lovely village of Sete Cidades, located in the center of a massive volcanic crater 3 miles across, on the western side of Sao Miguel Island. One of Portugal's most fascinating destinations, it is famous for its iconic twin Lakes.
The Azores are full of places that stop visitors dead in their tracks & cause a sharp, involuntary intake of breath. But the first glimpse of this enormous caldera on Ilha de Sao Miguel with its sparkling twin Lakes might just be the most eye-popping of them all.
Surrounded by thickly forested cliffs, this landscape has a fairy-tale quality, so it comes as no surprise that Sete Cidades is the source of Azorean legend. According to one, the Lakes - one blue, one green - formed from the tears of a Shepherd & Princess who shared a forbidden love. You might well shed a few tears (of joy) at the scenery.
Enroute, (depending on the discretion of the Tour-guide), you may pass by Caldeiras das Furnas & Furnas Lake, one of Sao Miguel’s main Lagoons, located in a dormant volcanic crater, where you will catch stunning views of volcanic landscapes, see bubbling Geysers & smoking Fumaroles.
No visit to Furnas would be complete without experiencing a meal cooked by Mother Nature herself. The Hot Springs of the Caldeira are used by locals to cook a traditional Stew known as Cozido das Furnas (Furnas stew) underground by steam from a Volcano & then transport to local Restaurants ready for hungry customers to enjoy.
A landmark in the enchanting village is the Monte Palace, a captivating abandoned Hotel. Despite its abandonment, the Monte Palace perched on the edge of the caldera, remains a popular attraction due to its incredible panoramic views of the surrounding natural beauty.
This once-grand Hotel offers visitors a unique vantage point to admire the iconic Lagoa das Sete Cidades, with its twin lakes, Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake) & Lagoa Verde (Green Lake), set against the backdrop of lush green hills & volcanic landscapes. The vista from the Monte Palace is often hailed as one of the most breathtaking views in the Azores, making it a must-visit spot for nature aficionados & Photographers.
While the building itself may be in a state of disrepair, its location & the scenic beauty it offers, remain unspoiled. Visitors can explore the grounds & witness the intriguing contrast between the grandeur of the abandoned structure & the timeless natural splendor that surrounds it.
Nestled in the heart of the Village, the Sao Nicolau Church stands out not only for its religious significance but also for its stunning design, which beautifully reflects the traditional Azorean architectural style, characterized by its simple yet elegant façade, typically painted in bright, welcoming colors that contrast beautifully against the lush green backdrop of the surrounding landscape. The white walls & unique trimmings are a common sight in Azorean religious architecture, making it a picturesque addition to the Village. It is equally impressive inside, with a peaceful & sacred ambiance.
Enjoy Lunch (included) in the village.
The awe-inspiring landscape of Sete Cidades is Azores’ most famed postcard image & Lagoa das Sete Cidades (the lake of the 'Seven Cities) is officially listed as one of the “7 Wonders of Portugal”. Although, hydrologically, the Lagoa das Sete Cidades is 1 Lake, it encompasses 2 separate bodies: Lagoa Verde & Lagoa Azul. Literally, the Green Lake & the Blue Lake (respectively), so named because each side of the Lake reflects the sunlight on the Water in different colors.
Although there are many Viewpoints to take in the breathtaking scenery, absolute best spot to fully appreciate the breathtaking views over the mystical blue & green Lakes is - by far - Vista do Rei.
On the way up to the Vista do Rei viewpoint, pass by Lagoa de Santiago, one of the most famous Portuguese ‘blue’ Lagoons, closely linked to the volcanic formation of the Massif of Sete Cidades.
The Village is criss-crossed by superb walking trails, including a 12 km circuit of the hydrangea-fringed rim & several routes leading down to the water’s edge.
The 1 km out & back popular Trail, that runs through the enchanting forest paths between the Miradouro da Lagoa de Santiago, upto the Viewpoint, is generally considered a moderately challenging route & takes an average of 27 minutes to complete.
Perched atop the rim of a volcanic Crater, Vista do Rei, which translates to "King's View," lives up to its regal name by providing visitors with a majestic vantage point. From this elevated spot, you will gaze out over the dual lakes of Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake) and Lagoa Verde (Green Lake), which are nestled within the Crater's expanse. The contrast between the vibrant blue & green hues of the Lakes against the lush green surroundings creates a mesmerizing & unforgettable sight.
As you descend from the breathtaking viewpoints above, follow the scenic road blanketed with vibrant hydrangeas, leading you back to the quaint Village nestled below. Each step offers a picturesque scene, seemingly crafted for the perfect Instagram shot. The blend of natural beauty & charming village life creates an atmosphere that feels almost dreamlike, inviting you to capture & share these idyllic moments.
Continue the sightseeing, driving towards Pico da Barrosa with a stop at the viewpoint of Lagoa do Fogo.
The Pico da Barrosa is, like hardly any other place on Sao Miguel, a place where every day countless people drive by when visiting Lagoa do Fogo & overlook the real beauty of this place. Not that Lagoa do Fogo & the descent down to the water are not worthwhile, but the much less strenuous climb to the ridge of Pico da Barrosa is at least as rewarding.
Admittedly, the peculiarity of this place is hidden behind a row of radio masts, which are not really worth seeing. Time & the weather also play a very important role here. But what is it that makes Pico da Barrosa so worthwhile that even the Island’s residents & especially young couples, come here? Well, the location is made to offer magnificent Sunsets combined with a view that extends almost over the entire Island.
The best place to start is the “Miradouro da Barrosa”. From here a path leads up to the Radio Towers, which is the only steep section of the short hike. Take the left path.
Continue to the summit of Pico da Barrosa, behind the crater wall of Lagoa do Fogo & Pico da Vela. Once at the top, visitors can see the surrounding Peaks of the highest mountains on the Island in the east & Pico da Cruz with the Crater walls around Sete Cidades in the far west.
As you walk back to the Village, you will come across Seagulls breeding on the steeper slopes, Blackbirds looking for food on the edge of the path & Butterflies on the flowers at the edge of the path.
Hop on the vehicle & drive to city of Ribeira Grande in the northern part of the Island.
Ribeira Grande in the northern part of the Island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, where you can discover & enjoy the beauty of the Lagoa do Fogo, was chosen as 1 of 7 Portuguese Wonders in the wild beach category.
According to the chronicler Gaspar Frutuoso, the first Settlers in 1474 from Madeira, chose the south coast to settle in, moving from the east to the west, from Povoaçao to Vila Franca & only later to the north coast. Due to the fertility of the soil & abundance of water in the area along the Ravine, the Colonists remained in this plain of the north central part of the island, which they eventually named after the river course: Ribeira Grande.
The expansion of Settlement occurred after initiatives by the Island's 3rd Donatary Captain of Sao Miguel, Rui Goncalves da Camara (son of Joao Goncalves Zarco), resulting in northern Colonies from peoples from Madeira.
Antao Rodrigues da Camara, the son Rui Gonçalves da Camara, set up his Estate with woodlands, pasture & waters, with houses supported by Granaries, Haylofts, Vineyards & Orchards. But records show there were already Colonists of a "certain social stature" living & raising cattle, here.
Until 1515, the western margin of the Ribeira Grande river was occupied by just 2 homes. A few years later, discovery of a ‘land record’ dated 04 July 1520, mentioned that the Community awarded a Contract to build a stone Bridge alongside the main Square, awarded to a Fernao Alvares.
Right from inception, due to continuous growth & demographics, the village employed an Arruador (Engineer & Planner), who was responsible for "designing" the grounds & roads & houses. Pero Teixeira, who died in 1555, was the first such official & at the time of his death, the Town records point to the existence of various roadways established under his authority & many references to the cobble-stoning other roads.
In 1536, Monastery of Jesus was founded, in order to shelter the youth of wealthy governing families. This was a reflection of the growth of the Settlement, which continued to evolve & expand regularly - in 1515 there were 200 homes, in 1576, the Parish had 1018 homes with 3534 souls. By 1593, there are indications that the population of the municipality reached 5000 inhabitants.
According to Frutuoso, its continuous growth came to a halt suddenly due to the serious seismic & volcanic crisis of the summer of 1563, which was followed by a catastrophic flood in the next winter. The Town was immediately rebuilt over the 18th century & renewed its urban fabric.
In other parts of the Municipality, such as Rabo de Peixe, its primitive parochial Church was substituted by a larger 3 nave structure, that featured n ornate painting of St. Peter attributed to Vasco Fernandes (1480-1543). A Clock was established in the Tower of the Church in 1555 & in 1578, a Bell was installed in the Municipal Palace Tower.
Between 1612 & 1626, the Convent of Sao Francisco was constructed, reflecting the importance of the northern community. This growth mandated the re-organization of the Island, resulting in the division of Sao Miguel into 3 Municipalities - Ponta Delgada, Vila Franca do Campo & Ribeira Grande.
The Town's limit was suddenly extended in the 1820's thanks to the addition of the parishes of Nossa Senhora da Graça & Espírito Santo. The Municipality as we know it, was consolidated in the last quarter of the 19th century, with the addition of Fenais da Ajuda & the town of Ribeira Grande witnessed a new urban impetus.
This led to the construction of the Church of Misericordia (18th century) & need to construct a new link across the main Ravine. It was during the 19th century, that the Ponte de Oito Arcos (Bridge of 8 Arcs) was completed, to complement the old 1 arch Bridge at the main Square.
Early in the 2nd half of the 20th century, there was an unsuccessful attempt to turn the town of Ribeira Grande into a City. New developments were built. At last, the old Town, hidden from the sea, became a City that firmly embraces the sea & tries to reach the future here & now.
There are many places to explore. Spend time walking around the historic Old Town.
Located on Avenida Jose Nunes da Ponte, the 4000m² Praça do Emigrante (Emigrant Square) was created with the aim of honoring all the Emigrants, especially those who left for Canada & the United States of America, in search of better living conditions. It has 3 distinct components: Globe, Stone, Sea. The floor of the Square, made of white cobblestone & black basalt, symbolizes the Sea, The Globe, 4 meters in diameter, covered with pavement & black basalt represents the Earth and the Stone on which the Globe rests represents the Island(s).
Designed by the Artist Liliana Lopes, it is also the realization of a dream of Luís Silva, former President of the Association of Azorean Emigrants, who was tireless in promoting the Project in emigrant communities.
Check out the the Oito Arcos Bridge that connects Rua Sousa e Silva on the right bank of the River to Rua do Estrela on the left bank, built on 8 round arches resting on rectangular pillars. Built in plastered stone masonry & painted white on the guards & wall panels on the south side and in exposed stonework with mortared joints on the remaining surfaces, the Pillars are reinforced, on the external faces, by pilasters that extend to the guard & are intersected, at mid-height, by the imposts of the arches. The imposts are dented on the inner sides of the arches. The board guard is perforated along its entire length and rests on a cornice reinforced by corbels.
The Bridge, which became part of the Municipal Coat of Arms, is one of the largest Azorean road works of the 19th century, under the responsibility of military Engineer & Peer of the Kingdom, Antonio Augusto de Sousa e Silva (1844-1925). The Paradise Bridge, which was successively enlarged in the same place as the first stone Bridge there, built by Fernao Alvares, is naturally a stopping point for all visitors.
Attached to the Paços dos Concelho building, on Rua da Praça, you can find the 16th century Manueline Window. Ex-libris of the city, perhaps the reliquat of the original Town Hall, it is a semi-detached Window, with a wooden mullion, also curious for its Renaissance frieze, a bas-relief in stone that displays a Pelican surrounded by 2 possible Griffins, in which the one on the right, appears to have not the beak of an Eagle, but a human head. Christian symbols, truly rare in the Municipality, deepen the enigma of the origin of such a brilliant heritage.
There are many Museums for those who have the time & the inclination. But a more unique one is Tobacco Museum, a scientific & cultural organization of Santa Casa da Misericordia do Divino Espirito Santo da Maia, dedicated to research, documentation, conservation, interpretation & dissemination of the tobacco agro-industry, from a perspective of social & local development of rural communities.
This Museum resulted from the recovery & conversion of a set of buildings & cultivation spaces from the former Tabacos da Maia factory, which was founded by Manuel Bento Sousa & operational between 1871 &1988. An important objective of the Museum is to create synergies & become an attractive center linked to tourist & cultural activities.
Many Churches too, to see from inside or outside.

Known for their singular natural beauty, the 9 Islands of the Azores Archipelago, have enchanted visitors & passionate residents, for centuries. Officially the Autonomous Region of the Azores, it is a transcontinental volcanic Archipelago, an autonomous territory of the Portuguese Republic, located in the Northeast Atlantic.
From a geographical point of view, the Islands are divided into 3 distinct Groups: Western consisting of the Islands of Corvo & Flores; Central encompassing Graciosa, Terceira, Sao Jorge, Faial & Pico; Eastern covers Sao Miguel & Santa Maria. Total population (2021 data) is around 236,657.
Lush landscapes & idyllic natural beauty. Terceira is home to the Azores' most iconic patchwork landscapes - gorgeous scenery reminiscent of the Irish & Icelandic countryside & one of the only lava tubes in the world that you can visit and see up close & personal!
As party Islands go, Terceira is a pretty mild one. This volcanic rock in the Azores archipelago isn’t much like Ibiza, nor Mykonos, nor Hvar. But by Portugal’s decorous standards, Terceira - with its seemingly endless religious-cultural Festivals & eccentric Street Parties - has a bit of a reputation.
Even though, Sao Miguel feels considerably more cosmopolitan & Ponta Delgada is a busy Port city with bigger Hotels & more Bars & Restaurants than other Islands, Terceira also, is one of the most visited destinations on the Azores, thanks to its excellent flight connections with Europe.
Terceira was the 3rd Island of the Azores to be discovered & was originally baptized with the name of the Island of Jesus Christ. The magnificent contrasts of Terceira, divided between natural beauty & the work of man, have made it a vacation destination known worldwide.
Relatively small, with an area of approximately 400 km2, with historical Towns & coastal Villages, drivable from one end to the other in around 40 minutes, the Island’s central parts consist mainly of wild Nature, Volcanoes & Pastures and are often covered with clouds & fog.
It began to be populated in the 15th century & has developed steadily since then, largely due to its geographical location. The bay of Angra gained great importance not only as an internal Trading Post for regional products produced on the other Islands, but also for its even greater prominence as an inter-continental staging post for Ships sailing between Europe, the Americas & India.
Here, culture permeates every corner. A multitude of cultural Institutions & Associations, Theater groups & Exhibition spaces, temporary or permanent, contribute to the dissemination & promotion of the cultural richness of the Island of Terceira.
In addition to being an ideal Island for Water Sports & Beach holidays & natural sceneries & Parks to explore, Terceira features a wealth of history.
On Terceira, it is possible to visit the inside of a Volcano & swim with wild Dolphins. The beautiful hiking Trails, cooling off in the natural sea water pools & tasting the local delicacies make it a relaxing holiday on this lush sub-tropical Island, known as the official Amusement Park of the Azores, thanks to its traditional celebrations continuing all summer long, dancing in the local Street parties until the wee hours.
As everywhere on all the Islands, Hiking & Adventure activities rule & 2 volcanic Caves stand out, here.
A unique true once-in-a-lifetime experience, on the Island, by far, is descending deep into a dormant Crater of a Volcano that last erupted just 2000 years ago, in Algar do Carvao located in the heart of Terceira. From the green entrance opening, there are stairs leading to the crystal clear Pond located on the bottom. On the way down, one can learn about the development of the Crater as well as admire the Stalactites & the spaciousness of the volcanic Cave. This is one of the only 2 huge, open Caves of its type in the world. The other is in Iceland, very cold & Adventurers have to rappel down into it. Algar do Carvao is by far more comfortable & accessible via Stairs.
Gruta do Natal (aka Christmas Cave) located in the center of Terceira, beside Lake Lagoa do Negro, is typical 700 meters long Lava Tunnel, left behind by an erupting flow of molten rock, that gained notoriety in the 1960s, when Islanders started celebrating Christmas Mass inside of it - the same spirit that led to all the Street parties, or as someone said, as there wasn’t very much to do on the Island, people had to get creative in order to amuse themselves.
In the Cave, it is possible to see different types of formations produced by the solidifying lava as well as to familiarize oneself with the geology of Terceira Island. Deep inside, the Islanders have set up an Altar, where a Mass takes place every Christmas.
Spending a day in the lively small Capital Angra do Heroismo is best done by walking around the city.
The historical center of Angra do Heroismo, dating back to 1534, is the 1st place in the Azores to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage listed sites, due to its unique urban layout & its importance as a testimony to Portuguese history & Atlantic navigation.
Seen from Alto da Memoria (Viewpoint on Monte Brasil), the historic centre is a testimony to the Kings & Noblemen who passed by here, leaving behind some beautiful architecture in its network of streets & alleyways and its Churches, Palaces, Mansions, Monuments, Squares & Gardens, which have been preserved until the present day. The City developed significantly from the 16th century, becoming a mandatory Stopover for the nautical routes of Mina, India & Brazil.
The history is amply illustrated by the cobble stone streets lined by colorful Houses & inviting Cafes. Each monument tells a new story, transforming Angra into a true monument city. In the Marina, one can sense the atmosphere of departures brought along by the Sailboats crossing the Atlantic & say hello to the Statue of the Explorer Vasco da Gama.
One of the main landmark of the city is the 16th century Se Catedral de Angra do Heroismo (Church of the Most Holy Saviour of the See) one the largest Church of the Azores. The first stone of the imposing Church was laid in 1570, based on an initial design by architect Luis Goncalves & the work lasted for 48 years. Until then, the existing Church was deemed too modest for the purpose. The new one was built as the Seat of the Bishopric of Angra & was inaugurated by Pope Paul III.
Its main facade comprises a Porch, a high pediment with a Clock (placed there in 1782), a Belfry & 2 side Bell Towers, with blue & white azulejo tiles arranged in a herringbone. Inside, 3 Naves are divided by stone Arches, containing the main Chapel, with its circular Apse & stone Vaults supported by ionic Columns.
Worth noting is the rich front of the high Altar in 18th century silver-plate & polychrome Tiles. In the side Chapels, there are several Altars, some of them dedicated to Marian Devotion. The Our Lady of the Angels Alter, has an image of Our Lady of the Conception & dates from the 18th century. In the Sacristy, note the furnishings in pau-brasil & jacaranda wood and a valuable Collection of Paintings, Sculptures & religious adornments, among them the magnificent Pontifical gifted by King D. Joao V.
The Cathedral was severely damaged by the Earthquake of January 1, 1980 & later by a fire in 1983. A vast artistic treasure, mainly of baroque decoration, was lost in these catastrophes. However, the rebuilt Church retains its distinguishing attributes. It has had a large Organ since 1993 & continues to be the pulse of civic life in Angra do Heroismo, its Bells & Clock, marking the daily life of the Angrenses
Museum fans can visit the MAH - Museu de Angra do Heroismo, home to contemporary art & historical attractions & an important cultural institution in Azores, with a diverse Collection reflecting the history of the region, the impact of its geo-strategic location in the Atlantic & the Conflicts that have occurred since the 15th century.
Situated in a 17th century former Franciscan Convent, one can find a bit of everything. Many novelties can be seen here, material testimonies from Art to Technology. Notable are its Collections of Military History including Weapons & Medals om the 18th & 19th centuries. The Collection includes Painting, Sculptures, Ceramics, Porcelain, Coins, Furniture & Cars, depicting the lives, travels & culture of the people from Terceira. Technical & scientific instruments including many Navigational Instruments (Portugal was a leader in maritime exploration) etc. Civil & religious Attire, Toys & Musical Instruments are also on view. The MAH, in cooperation with the Regional Center for Handicraft Support, holds regular Exhibitions & Residencies featuring local Artisans & Designers. Guided visits, Talks & a wide range of Workshops are also offered.
Besides the Museum, the Monastery also houses the Church of St. Francis (also known as the Church of Our Lady of Guia), which is a beautiful example of 18th century religious architecture, boasting magnificent Woodwork & Ceilings, whether in Altarpieces, Altar, Statues, Sculptures & Tile panels.
History buffs will like the 2 Forts here, unique examples of military architecture dating back more than 400 years. Construction for the Castelo de Sao Filipe (also known as Fortress of Sao Joao Baptista or Fortaleza do Monte Brasil) started around 1592, by order of Philip II of Spain & Portugal, according to a design by Giovanni Casale, Tiburcio Spanochi & Anton Colla. It is one of the largest Fortress with enclosed space, on the Planet & was primarily intended for the protection of West Indian Ships. It protected both sides of the City & is equipped with defensive Moats. The Portuguese revolt of 1640 gave rise, here, to a memorable epic Siege, involving nearly 7000 men, from different Islands. In its Tower, the blue & white liberal flag of Dª was raised for the first time on land. It offers great views over the City & the Ocean.
Forte de Sao Sebastiao (also referred to as Castelo de Sao Sebastiao or simply Castelinho), is a cliff-top Fort in the heart of the historic old town. Designed by architect Tomaz Benedito de Pesaro in Italian style, it was built in the 17th century during the reign of King Dom Sebastiao of Portugal, who was aware of the Island´s strategic importance.
It represented a new concept of coastal protection & was the first major maritime fortification in the City, crossing fires with the Monte Brasil Fortress, to defend the Porto Pipas, the most important Anchorage & Shipyard on the Island, an important centre for international maritime trade & Portugal´s maritime operations. This is where the Ships sailing between Brazil & India, loaded with precious cargoes, used to stop & which the English & French Pirates found impossible to resist.
Guarding the entrance of the Port, it was of paramount importance as a defensive position & as a military Barracks & Governor’s residence for hundreds of years. It was the scene of resounding victories against Pirates & Corsairs & witnessed the defeat of Navies in the mid-Atlantic Ocean. The Fort was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site & that led to comprehensive repairs & renovations. Later, it was leased & transformed into a Pousada (luxury Hotel).
Too many other places to explore.
Overnight. B
Day 05 - | Terceira
Morning, you will be met by the Tour-guide at 09.00 am & embark on a full day tour of this enchanting Island.
The tour will familiarise you with some of the landmarks spread across all areas of the Island - South, East, North & Central (you may not be able to visit all the places listed here which would depend on the available time & discretion of the Tour-guide).
First stop will be at Monte Brasil Nature Reserve. A little over 20,000 years ago, a small Volcano emerged from the sea in the proximity of Angra do Heroismo, on the south coast of Terceira, which until that point had been quite round, creating the most imposing Volcanic structure on the Azorean coast. Tectonically, it was formed by a system of faults parallel to the Terceira Rift, an oceanic spreading centre which crosses the Archipelago of Azores, encompassing the Cinco Picos & Guilherme Moniz-Pico Alto Volcanoes. What can be seen today, resulted from 2 distinct phases of Eruption, separated by a dormant period.
The extinct Volcano, which can be seen from all over town, was named Monte Brasil & today, it is a protected landscape, encompassed in Monte Brasil Nature Reserve, filled with Deer & Ducks & many duly marked hiking & walking Trails winding throughout the area.
Monte Brasil is flanked by 2 Bays - Bay of Angra (named for the city) to its east & Bay of Fanal to its west & was used as a defensive point during the history of Angra, resulting in the construction of various Forts & Redoubts, overlooking the city.
Entering the Reserve, Visitors first come across Fortaleza de Sao Joao Baptista (Saint John the Baptist), that is still in use by the Portuguese Army. Located on Monte Brasil, it is one of the largest & most important Forts that were built in Portugal at the end of the 16th century. This is where the Spanish used to conduct hangings of Portuguese leaders during their rule. You can also see the British guns from WWII era, that are still present. There is also a Monument to mark the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Azores.
It is possible to enter the Fort by taking a free Tour, nearly every hour, that is led by a Soldier stationed there. Farther up the mountain, the best Viewpoints to stop at, are Pico das Cruzinhas, Pico do Zimbreiro, & Pico do Facho, the highest points on Monte Brasil.
Indications of undated human presence on the Mount includes artificial Cavities located along the Hill to provide shelter, but with little hint of any formal use. Although those on Pico do Zimbreiro are vacant, similar spaces on the roadways to the Caldera & Caminho das Belas-donas have bunks along the interior walls. These Chambers are not suitable for habitation but could be used as simple structures for Phoenician Shrines. There are also other explanations on the usage, e.g. the Chambers were created in medieval times for military or agriculture needs.
Some Historians have speculated that these Cavities have been created by ancient cultures, e.g. Phoenicians. Another Grotto on the roadway indicates its use as place to collect & store water, including Channels, Taps & Reservoir. Such discovery would testify the presence of ancient cultures in Azores long before Portuguese.
After spending an hour here, drive on to the Bay of Salga, historically significant for the famous Battle of Salga, which delayed the military conquest of the Azores by Spanish forces on 25 July 1581. Troops loyal to Antonio, Prior of Crato, pretender to the Portuguese Throne, defended the Island of Terceira in his name against forces loyal to Castile, during the Portuguese succession crisis of 1580.
Also, within the proximity of the coast, is the restored Home of Brianda Pereira, a peasant woman who led a group of women who released Cattle & Bulls against the Spanish coming ashore, forcing the troops to return to their Ships. This incident permitted the Islanders to hold out for another 2 years & resulted in Terceira becoming the unique independent Portuguese territory not administered by Spain. There is also a Monument to mark the heroic woman's perseverance & fortitude.
Next stop is Sao Sebastiao Mother Church, the oldest on Terceira Island. The lovely Church, located in the charming City of Sao Sebastiao, on the eastern coast of Terceira Island, was built by the first Settlers around 1455, but underwent a major expansion in 1568. After a major fire in 1789, the renovations were completed only in 1795.
The Church built in a late-Gothic style, not too common in the Island, is considered as one of the most beautiful & valuable works of art existing in the Azores. The main facade is simple, with an ogid Portico, a rose window & a baroque Tower crowned by a hexagonal ‘pyramid’ finishing. The exterior also features Portals in notable Manueline style, baroque Doorways & Arches. There is the royal Coat of Arms & the Shield with the arrows depicting the martyrdom of St. Sebastian. On the south facade, there are 2 Busts identified as King John III & Queen Catherine of Austria.
In front of the Church, the Square features a monument allusive to the Saga Battle & a 1918 building in imperio style. To the North, is located the curious 13th century imerio (facade) of Bastardo Fountain, with its tri-lobed arches. The interior is divided into 3 Naves separated by 6 Arches, the central one covered by a wooden trough & the Renaissance Chapel. The interior is also enriched by 17th & 18th century sculpted Works in local cedarwood & other rare woods such as ebony, 17th century Azulejo Tile panels & Jacaranda wood furniture in the Sacristy & a rich collection of 16th century embroidered Vestments, of gold on tapestry.
The main highlights are the interesting 16th century Renaissance or late-medieval Frescos on its walls, unique in the entire Archipelago, depicting the Stations of the Cross, Final Judgment & Christ appearing to different Saints.
From here, move on to Praia da Vitoria, a Municipality that extends from the northern coast of Terceira halfway into the interior. Once the first Settlers had definitively settled, at the beginning in the 15th century, on the Island of Terceira, Jacome de Bruges, the first Captain of the Island took up residence, together with his lieutenant Diogo de Teive on Praia & it became the Seat of the Captaincy of Terceira between 1456 & 1474.
It was previously called just “Praia” & Vitoria” was added in 1829. The region developed quickly, thanks to the Pastry & Wheat culture & ultimately, Praia was elevated to a town in 1480. Agriculture, Livestock & its Port was responsible for the City's evolution as Commercial Vessels circulated there carrying out business on the islands of the Archipelago. Its development was hampered by a natural catastrophe, the so-called Caida da Praia, where large earthquakes caused great destruction in the city. In the 20th century, the City began to be rebuilt & a new Port & a military Airport were added.
The Historic Center has many Monuments & historic buildings & traditional cobblestone Streets & typical architecture of the time. Rua de Jesus is a very interesting Shopping Street with colorful decorations. At the end of the Street, there is the 19th century Municipal Market next to a small public Garden.
Praça Francisco Ornelas da Camara is the central Square built in the 14th century, where you can find works of Art & ancient Sculptures. The City Hall with its Statue of Liberty is also located here.
The 15th century Church of Santa Cruz (Main Church) in Gothic & Manueline style, is considered as one of the largest & most beautiful religious Monuments on the entire Island. The main Altar has golden tiles.
The Casa Museu Vitorino Nemesio in a historic building from the 17th century, was where acclaimed Author Vitorino Nemesio was born in 1901 & lived. He was a very influential person in the city, holding high academic positions & popular on TV. The House featuring the Writer's personal objects, is open for visits. Next to it is the Public Library known as the Casa das Tias, which was the home of Nemesio's aunts, who helped him a lot financially when he studied at the University of Coimbra.
Santa Catarina Fort is located at the tip of Praia Bay. The 16thcentury fortification was the main defense, built to defend the Anchorage, the current Praia da Vitoria Oceanic Port, from frequent attacks by Pirates & Privateers.
A unique true once-in-a-lifetime experience, on the Island, by far, is descending 100 meters deep into a dormant Crater of a Volcano that last erupted just 2000 years ago, in Algar do Carvao located in the heart of Terceira. From the green entrance opening, there are stairs leading to the crystal clear Pond located on the bottom. On the way down, one can learn about the development of the Crater as well as admire the Stalactites created by the lava & the spaciousness of the volcanic Cave. This is one of the only 2 huge, open Caves of its type in the world. The other is in Iceland, very cold & Adventurers have to rappel down into it. Algar do Carvao is by far more comfortable & accessible via Stairs.
Then, there are the famous Porto Martins Natural Swimming Pools, comprising several natural pools, surrounded by rocks that contrast with the blue of the sea, with all the facilities like Bars to enjoy exotic cocktails & Showers, Toilets, Parking etc., are very popular in the hot summer months, among the locals.
The Bathing Area in the Bay, is very close to the Marina & has the largest Beach - Praia Grande - ideal for Windsurfing. With excellent visitor support infrastructure with Bars, Restaurants, Showers, Parking & easy access for people with reduced mobility.
There are many Viewpoints to enjoy the idyllic scenery. The Miradouro do Facho located top of the Mountain in Serra do Facho, close to the Marina at Praia, offers one of the best views of the Port, the Serra do Cume & the City. There used to be a Lighthouse here in the 15th - 16th centuries & a Fire used to be lit every evening, to warn sailors of the location. The Hill also houses the Monument of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, honouring the City's patron Saint, inaugurated in 1999. Made of bronze, it is 6 meters high & is placed on a 16 meter high Pedestal.
The Serra do Cume Viewpoint located on a primitive Volcano with a Cldera measuring around 15 km, was opened in 2008 & offers one of the most beautiful views of the Island - the Bay, the City & the exuberant nature of the interior areas. During WW2, it hosted an underground military complex, Casamates da Serra do Cume (now abandoned)
Miradouro Cruz do Canario is a serene Viewpoint that offers incredible views of the entire beautiful coast of the Island, the Ocean & Ilheu das Cabras. On days with clearer views, one can see Sao Jorge Island.
The last stop will be at Museu do Vinho dos Biscoitos (Wine Museum), part of an iconic Winery that produces the famous Verdelho Wine, located in the city of Biscoitos.
This Museum presents different stages of Wine production, from the Vines surrounded by square beds (“curraletas”), to Wine Press & storage in Wooden Barrels. Learn about the history of Wine in the region & on the Island through Exhibits & an important Collection of ancient Tools & Utensils relevant to different stages of Winemaking - in the Vineyard & in grape harvesting.
There is also a Room dedicated to the Ethnography of the region with valuable Documents illustrating the Culture of Terceira Island & Azores.
The Museum is also the headquarters of the Vinho Verdelho dos Biscoitos Brotherhood, created for the promotion & improvement of the oldest & most famous Wine brand of the Island. It was the initiative of Brum Farming House, founded by Francisco Maria Brum in 1890. The Brum Family, of Flemish descent, has been dedicated to the production & improvement of the unique Verdelho Wine of the Azores, for 5 generations.
Adjoining the Museum is the Verdelho Distillery, the Bottling Room & the Wine Cellar, with a Tasting Room & of course, the option of buying their exquisites Wines.
The tour ends & you are transferred back to the Hotel.

Some important notes
- Flights are subject to constant modifications / delays and cancellations. In such cases, we will do all possible to find the best available alternative / solution but will not accept any liability, whatsoever.
- Our rates only include those items which are specified in the Itinerary / Inclusions.
- The cost has been calculated on the existing tariffs / conditions and in case of any currency fluctuations or amendment in local Government taxes, or any fuel hike, we reserve the right to revise the tour price accordingly.
- Our quotations are calculated on base category of accommodation at each property and are subject to modification, if the same hotel / category of room not available at the time of reservation. In that case, we will confirm a superior category of room at a comparable or better hotel and supplement charges, if any, shall be advised accordingly. Final Itinerary will illustrate updated information and / or it would be furnished at the time of confirmation.
- All prices are per person, based on double occupancy, and subject to availability at the time of booking. The from price reflects the lowest available price at time of publication, which is valid for a specific start date or dates and also based on availability at the time of booking.
- Room availability is getting saturated due to heavy demands from the tourism industry, international Fairs and Congresses. Due to these constant sold- out situations the hotels are applying the cancellation rules more stringently. Once the reservation is guaranteed, the booking will be subject to full cancellation charges as per our Terms & Conditions (details will be advised at the time of deposit). We strongly recommend obtaining Insurance to protect yourself against any unforeseen scenarios.
- Additional services including Optionals, if any, can be paid directly by the clients to our local offices.
The Journeys strongly recommends that all Guests purchase appropriate Travel Insurance (Trip Cancellation / Interruption & Medical) to cover any eventuality & / or Emergency. Between missed Connections, lost or delayed Luggage, or Medical Emergencies, you want some peace of mind that your travel investment is well protected. No matter who you buy from, please consider purchasing a Travel Protection Plan before you travel. Still unsure? Talk to us.
