Incredible Cambodia…the time to go is now
Angkor in Depth
“Travel & change of place, imparts a new vigor to the mind” – Lucius Annaeus Seneca
From the nomadic steppes of Kazakhstan to the frenetic streets of Hanoi, Asia is a continent so full of intrigue, adventure, solace & spirituality that it has fixated & confounded travellers for centuries. Lush landscapes, urban jungles, blissful beaches, brooding volcanoes, ancient temples, modernist architecture, creative cuisine - Asia seamlessly delivers the accessible, affordable exotic.
Then, there’s a magic about Cambodia that casts a spell on many who visit this charming yet confounding kingdom. Come…..experience the idyllic serenity of Angkor Wat…..with us.
Asia is a spiritual space. As dawn breaks, pots of rice bubble over & the smoke of incense wafts from earth to heaven. Barefoot monks embark on their call to alms among the faithful; the muezzin's call reverberates from mosques urging devotees to prayer; and family altars are flush with fruit & flowers for the guardian spirits. The region’s great monuments were wrought from divine inspiration, from Angkor’s heaven incarnate to Bagan’s shimmering spires. The spiritual side of life is omnipresent & travellers can boost their karmic balance at meditation retreats or by hiking to a golden temple atop a sacred mountain.
The cities are stepping into the future with one foot dragging in the past. Bangkok is the gateway to many Asian adventures, where skytrains whisk shoppers from mall to mall & hawkers ply their wares on the steaming pavements below. Singapore is a gleaming testament to Asia at its most efficient. For old meets new, explore the backstreets of Phnom Penh, Hanoi's Old Quarter or downtown Yangon, which have a beguiling blend of traditional architecture, colonial-era gems and a contemporary twist. One thing all the cities have in common is a buzz.
Water has sculpted many Southeast Asian landscapes. The jungle-topped islands are fringed by coral reefs that calm the ocean into turquoise pools. The languorous Vietnamese coastline greets the South China Sea from tip to tail, while inland dramatic karst mountains soar skywards. The meandering Mekong River winds its way from the densely packed mountains of northern Laos to the pancake-flat rice bowl of the Mekong Delta. The traditional ‘highways’ of Borneo are coffee-coloured, jungle-clad rivers. And the volcanoes of Indonesia & the Philippines provide a glimpse into the earth’s volatile heart.
And now, let us talk about the magic of Cambodia that casts a spell on many who visit this charming yet confounding kingdom.
.
Breathtaking Antiquity | Empire of Temples | Cambodian Spirit
There is a magic about Cambodia that casts a spell on many who visit this charming yet confounding kingdom. Ascend to the realm of the gods at the mother of all temples, Angkor Wat, a spectacular fusion of symbolism, symmetry & spirituality. Descend into the hell of Tuol Sleng and come face to face with the Khmer Rouge & its killing machine.
Just as Angkor is more than its wat, so too is Cambodia more than its temples. The chaotic yet charismatic capital of Phnom Penh is a hub of political intrigue, economic vitality and intellectual debate. All too often overlooked by hit & run tourists ticking off Angkor on a regional tour, the revitalised city of Siem Reap is finally earning plaudits in its own right thanks to a gorgeous riverside location, a cultural renaissance, and a dining & drinking scene to rival the best in the region. And don’t forget the rest of the country: relax in the sleepy seaside town of Kampot & trek the nearby Bokor National Park; take an elephant ride in the jungles of Mondulkiri ; ogle the Mekong dolphins at Kratie or simply choose a beach near Sihanoukville.
Contemporary Cambodia is the successor state to the mighty Khmer empire, which, during the Angkor period, ruled much of what is now Laos, Thailand & Vietnam. The remains of this empire can be seen at the fabled Temples, monuments unrivalled in scale & grandeur in Southeast Asia. The traveller’s first glimpse of Angkor Wat, the ultimate expression of Khmer genius, is simply staggering & is matched by only a few select spots on earth, such as Machu Pichu or Petra.
Siem Reap & Phnom Penh may be the heavyweights, but to some extent they are a bubble, a world away from the Cambodia of the countryside. This is the place to experience the rhythm of rural life and timeless landscapes of dazzling rice paddies and swaying sugar palms. Spend some time in the srok (provinces), as Cambodians call them, enjoying a dar leng (walkabout) to discover the true flavour of the country.
The south coast is fringed by tropical islands, with barely a beach hut in sight. The next Ko Samui or Gili Trawangan awaits discovery & for now, visitors can play Robinson Crusoe. Inland from the coast lie the Cardamom Mountains, part of a vast tropical wilderness that provides a home to elusive wildlife & is the gateway to emerging ecotourism adventures. The mighty Mekong River cuts through the country & is home to some of the region’s last remaining freshwater dolphins; cyclists or dirt bikers can follow the river’s length as it meanders through traditional communities. The northeast is a world unto itself, its wild & mountainous landscapes a home for Cambodia’s ethnic minorities & an abundance of natural attractions, including thundering waterfalls & pristine crater lakes.
There are 2 faces to Cambodia: one shiny & happy, the other dark & complex. For every illegal eviction of city dwellers or land grab by a General, there will be a new NGO school offering better education, or a new clean-water initiative to improve the lives of the average villager. The Khmers have been to hell & back, struggling through years of bloodshed, poverty & political instability. Thanks to an unbreakable spirit & infectious optimism, they have prevailed with their smiles intact; no visitor comes away from Cambodia without a measure of admiration & affection for the inhabitants of this enigmatic Kingdom.
Cambodia beaches as beautiful as Thailand but without the tourist tide; wilds as remote as Laos but even less explored; cuisine as subtle as Vietnam but yet to be discovered & Temples that leave Burma & Indonesia in the shade. This is the heart of Southeast Asia, with everything the region has to offer packed into one bite-sized country. If you were only planning to spend a week in Cambodia, it is time to think again.
The years of fear & loathing are finally over & Angkor is once more the symbol of the nation, drawing pilgrims from across the globe. Peace has come to this beautiful yet blighted land after three decades of war, and the Cambodian people have opened their arms to the world. Such is the yin & yang of Cambodia, a country that inspires and confounds. Like an onion, the more layers you unravel, the more it makes you want to cry, but these are spontaneous tears, sometimes of sorrow, sometimes of joy.
Arrive in Siem Reap to visit Angkor Wat - one of the largest Temple complex in the world spread over an area of 162.6 hectares, a virtual city discovered amidst the jungle wilderness.
Enroute stopping at many more interesting places.
The UNESCO Heritage listed Angkor Wat Temples are the largest religious monuments in the world & are denoted as the heart & soul of Cambodia. The traveller's first glimpse of Angkor Wat, the ultimate expression of Khmer genius, is matched by only a few select spots on earth.
Originally constructed as a Hindu Temple dedicated to the God Vishnu during the reign of the Khmer Empire by King Suryavaram II, it was gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century.
Surrounded by a vast moat, the Temple is one of the most inspired monuments ever conceived by the human mind. The inner moats & walls of Angkor Wat are nested congruently in rectangular shapes symbolizing ocean cosmology and mountain chains.
It is the national symbol, the epicentre of Khmer civilisation and a source of fierce national pride. It was never abandoned to the elements & has been in virtually continuous use since it was built.
Simply unique, it is a stunning blend of spirituality & symmetry, an enduring example of humanity’s devotion to its gods. Relish the very first approach, as that spine-tingling moment when you emerge on the inner causeway will rarely be felt again. It is the best-preserved Temple at Angkor, and repeat visits are rewarded with previously unnoticed details.
Take the plunge now & yep…. the conundrum that is Cambodia is waiting. Despite having the 8th wonder of the world in its backyard, Cambodia’s greatest treasure is its people. A unique experience is just the beginning……. a warm welcome, historical secrets & an artistic paradise awaits you and The Journeys is ready to take you on well, a journey (or journeys) of discovery.
Come…be inspired & discover the World with us

Wrapped in rainforests, edged by golden sands, crowned by volcanoes, studded with ruins of lost civilisations: this is Southeast Asia as you have always imagined it. The life-support system & gateway for the temples of Angkor, Siem Reap was always destined for great things
Breathtaking Antiquity | Empire of Temples | Cambodian Spirit
Is Siem Reap better than Phnom Penh? Yes, simply because Cambodia prefers to highlight its Khmer Empire origins rather than its time under the Khmer Rouge. While Phnom Penh offers better shopping & hotel experiences, Siem Reap is far more rewarding for foreign tourists.
Siem Reap, a once quaint laid-back & pleasant village, located on the shores of the Tonle Sap Lake, the greatest sweet water reserve in whole Southeast Asia, in northwestern Cambodia, is the life - support system & gateway to the world famous Temple ruins of Angkor, the seat of the Khmer kingdom from the 9th - 15th centuries. The village was part of an area that had long been controlled by Thailand until the French Protectorate was established in 1863. The French began to restore the Temples immediately & Angkor Wat quickly became one of the central attractions in Asia, pulling in celebrities & adventurers alike.
Siem Reap literally means Siamese defeated (“Thailand destroyed”), referring to the centuries old conflict between the 2 nation & the subsequent victory of the Khmer Empire over the army of the Thai kingdom in the 17th century. However, the arrival of the Khmer Rouge and the tragedy & civil war that followed completely closed the country to visitors.
After Angelina Jolie’s Tomb Raider was released in 2001, splashing the temples of Angkor on cinema screens all over the world, Siem Reap has reinvented itself as the epicentre of chic Cambodia, with everything from backpacker party pads to hip hotels, world-class wining & dining across a range of cuisines, sumptuous spas, great shopping & a creative cultural scene that includes Cambodia's leading Circus. Visitors come here to see the Temples, of course, but there is plenty to do in & around the city when you are templed out.
Whether it is enjoying sipping a coffee & people-watching in the town, taking a quad bike out into the countryside, or bargaining for silks & silver in the burgeoning markets, there are plenty of options.
The central shopping & restaurant area is concentrated around the south of the city near the Old Market. Nearly every week a new bar, boutique, massage spa, or restaurant seems to open; such is the pace of development. What can seem a sleepy town by day (because everyone is at the Temples) is teeming with people in high season after sunset, with tuktuks & motos jostling for space on the small streets.
Perhaps the most famous street in town is Pub Street – no guesses where the name comes from. Dominated by 2 Night Clubs – Temple Club & Angkor What?, it is lined with bars & restaurants, many with seating upstairs so you can escape above the partying milieu on the street below & is the go-to place for travellers looking for a large night out. For those who prefer a quieter evening, the adjoining alleys are host to a myriad of smaller, idiosyncratic establishments – many of which are just as quaint to explore in the day time as at night.
Later in the afternoon, meet the Tour-guide & proceed to the Angkor National Museum.
Looming large on the road to Angkor is the Angkor National Museum, a state-of-the-art showpiece on the Khmer civilisation & the majesty of Angkor.
During the Golden Era of the Khmer Kingdom, one of the ancient civilizations of this world was being created. It was the origin of Khmer art, culture & architecture. These great inventions became one of the few wonders of the world that still amaze people throughout generations that still hold a great impact in present Cambodia society.
The Museum takes pride in revealing the royal historical path of this Golden Era, through state of the art multimedia technology to provide visitors a full pictorial story of the legend for easy comprehension. To enable visitors to have a deep & clear understanding of each artifact, the staff at the Museum is glad to provide you with a personal translation device or Audio tour set (available in Khmer, English, German, Korean, Japanese, French, Chinese & Thai) For your convenience, your personal belongings will be kept in the provided deposit box, free of charge.
The Museum will take its visitors through the journey back in time from the creation to the highest point of Khmer civilization. Through the use of interactive exhibits, visitors will develop a deeper understanding of customs, traditions and different beliefs of the ancient empire.
A tour of the Museum will be joyful for both visitors who have a good understanding of ancient Khmer civilization as well as those who do not have any previous knowledge of the ancient Khmer empire. All artifacts are divided into 8 Galleries in the order of the evolution which are enhanced by a realistic atmosphere. Throughout the whole experience Angkor National Museum will allow this legend to slowly reveal before your eyes.
Exhibits include touch-screen videos, epic commentary & the chance to experience a panoramic sunrise at Angkor Wat, though there seems to be less sculpture on display here than in the National Museum in Phnom Penh.
Displays are themed by era, religion & royalty as visitors move through the impressive galleries. After a short presentation, visitors enter the Zen-like Gallery of a Thousand Buddhas, which has a fine collection of images. Other exhibits include the pre-Angkorian periods of Funan & Chenla; the great Khmer kings; Angkor Wat; Angkor Thom; & the inscriptions.
Some of the standout pieces in the collection include a late 12th - 13th century seated Buddha sheltered by a naga, a 7th century standing Vishnu from Sambor Prei Kuk in Kompong Thom & a stunning 10th century lintel from the beautiful Temple of Banteay Srei.
It is a very useful experience for first-time visitors, putting the story of Angkor & the Khmer empire in context before exploring the temples.
After the Museum tour, you will enjoy a spectacular view from above & get an idea of the sheer size of the Temple area as you ride in a tethered helium balloon that takes you 120 meter up in the air!
See Angkor Wat, Phnom Bakheng, West Baray & other ruins amongst the surrounding jungle and rice paddies glimmering in the best evening light. (Note: Balloon operations are subject to weather conditions and may be stopped without prior notice).
Come back to the hotel. Freshen up & be ready for Dinner.
In time, meet the Rep & proceed to the renowned beautiful Mahob restaurant - a culinary hotspot that takes traditional Khmer cuisine to a new level. Using only locally produced ingredients, this beautiful restaurant serves up some of the best local delicacies that Siem Reap has to offer. Located in a traditional Khmer wooden house in a peaceful cosy garden setting, and away from the bustling Pub Street area, Mahob provides you with a truly genuine Khmer welcome experience.
Return to the hotel.

Day 02 - | Siem Reap vAngkor Archaeological Park vSiem Reap Drive: 9 km x 2
And now comes the ‘raison d’etre’ of coming to Siem Reap in the first place.
Siem Reap had more than 1000 temples, built between the 9th - 13th centuries & the remaining structures are the sacred skeleton of what was once the social, religious & administrative centre of the Khmer Empire.
Wake up at dawn, meet the Tour-guide in the Lobby at 06.00 am or earlier & head to Angkor Archaeological Park to see Angkor Wat for sunrise & a morning tour of the Temple before the crowds arrive.
Welcome to heaven on earth. Angkor Wat is stunning at any time of the day, but sunrise & sunset are especially beautiful times to watch the play of light on the stones.
Wat is the Khmer name for Temple, which was probably added to “Angkor" when it became a Theravada Buddhist monument, most likely in the 16th century. After 1432 when the capital moved to Phnom Penh, Angkor Wat was cared for by Buddhist monks.
Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites of Southeast Asia, extending over approximately 400 square kilometres including forested area & consisting of scores of temples, hydraulic structures (basins, dykes, reservoirs, canals) as well as communication routes - the magnificent remains of different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to 15th century. The ancient Khmer city of Angkor was the largest preindustrial metropolis in the world, with a population near 1 million & an urban sprawl that stretched over an area similar to modern-day Los Angeles.
Angkor Wat is, figuratively, heaven on earth & is the earthly representation of Mt Meru, the Mt Olympus of the Hindu faith & the abode of ancient gods. The Temples here are the perfect fusion of creative ambition & spiritual devotion. The Cambodian ‘god-kings’ of old each strove to better their ancestors in size, scale & symmetry, culminating in what is believed to be the world’s largest religious complex spread over 162.6 hectares.
Angkor’s vast complex of intricate stone buildings, in their beauty & state of preservation, is unrivaled & its mightiness, magnificence illustrating a pomp & a luxury surpassing that of a Pharaoh or a Shah Jahan, an impressiveness greater than that of the Pyramids, an artistic distinctiveness as fine as that of the Taj Mahal.
The largest, best preserved & most religiously significant of the Angkor Temples, Angkor Wat impresses visitors both by its sheer scale & beautifully proportioned layout, as well as the delicate artistry of its carvings. An architectural masterpiece, its perfection in composition, balance, proportions, relief's & sculpture make it one of the finest monuments in the world.
The sandstone blocks from which Angkor Wat was built were quarried from the holy mountain of Phnom Kulen, more than 50 km away & floated down the Siem Reap River on rafts. The logistics of such an operation are mind blowing, consuming the labour of thousands. According to inscriptions, the construction of Angkor Wat involved 300,000 workers & 6000 elephants, yet it was still not fully completed.
A stunning blend of spirituality & symmetry, iconic Angkor Wat is the heart & soul of Cambodia - an enduring example of humanity’s devotion to its gods. It is the national symbol, the epicentre of Khmer civilisation, a source of fierce national pride & pictured on the country’s Flag. As the best-preserved Temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation, was never abandoned to the elements & has been in virtually continuous use since it was built. The Temples are a source of inspiration & national pride to all Khmers as they struggle to rebuild their lives after the years of terror and trauma & today, a point of pilgrimage for all Cambodians.
Breaking from the Shaiva tradition of previous Kings, it was originally constructed in the first half of the 12th century as a Hindu Temple dedicated to god Vishnu, in Yasodharapura (present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, by King Suryavarman II as the state Temple & became his eventual Mausoleum, oriented to the west to conform to the symbolism between the setting sun & death. It was gradually transformed into a Buddhist Temple towards the end of his reign.
There is much about Angkor Wat that is unique among the Temples of Angkor. Acclaimed as one of the most inspired monuments ever conceived by the human mind, the ‘temple that is a city’, is the perfect fusion of creative ambition & spiritual devotion. The traveler's first glimpse of Angkor Wat, the ultimate expression of Khmer genius, is matched by only a few select spots on earth.
To approach the Temple soaring skyward, visitors first cross the vast moat that would make its European castle counterparts blush, continuing along a broad causeway lined with naga balustrades.
The plan of Angkor Wat is difficult to grasp when walking through the monument because of the vastness. Its complexity & beauty both attract & distract one's attention. From a distance, Angkor Wat appears to be a colossal mass of stone on one level with a long causeway leading to the center but close up it is a series of elevated towers, covered galleries, chambers, porches & courtyards on different levels linked by stairways.
Stretching around the central Temple complex is an 800 meter long series of bas-reliefs featuring almost intricate stone carvings of almost 2000 beguiling Apsaras (heavenly nymphs), each of them unique with 37 different hairstyles for budding stylists to check out, that adorn nearly every surface of the outer gallery walls. Many of these exquisite apsaras have been damaged by centuries of bat droppings & urine, but they are now being restored by the German Apsara Conservation Project.
The Temple is admired for the grandeur & harmony of the architecture, its extensive bas-reliefs narrate stories from Hindu mythology, including the famous Churning of the Ocean of Milk & for the numerous devatas adorning its walls.
The height of Angkor Wat from the ground to the top of the central Tower rising 55 meters is greater than it might appear - 213 meters achieved with 3 rectangular or square levels (1-3). Each one is progressively smaller & higher than the one below starting from the outer limits of the Temple, which gives the whole ensemble its sublime unity.
As you enter the main building, ascend through a series of galleries & courtyard before reaching the central sanctuary, which offers beautiful views back over the causeway & across the surrounding countryside.
Covered galleries with columns define the boundaries of the 1st & 2nd levels. The 3rd level supports 5 towers - 4 in the corners & one in the middle & these is the most prominent architectural feature of Angkor Wat. Graduated tiers, one rising above the other, give the towers a conical shape & near the top, rows of lotuses taper to a point.
You will be right in time to catch the beautiful evening light from Pre Rup, a pyramidal temple surrounded by a sea of rice fields.
The Tour finishes & you return to the hotel.
Balance of the day is at leisure to relax or explore independently (we shall be happy to offer suggestions for Optional activities & arrange).
Overnight. B
Day 03 - | Siem Reap vBeng Mealea vSiem Reap Drive: 59 km x 2
Very early in the morning, around 07.00 am, meet the Tour-guide & head out to the beautiful Cambodian countryside to see another group of Temples.
A spectacular sight to behold, Beng Mealea is one of the most mysterious Temples at Angkor, as nature has well & truly run riot. Exploring this titanic Temple, built to the same floor plan as Angkor Wat, is the ultimate Indiana Jones experience. Built in the 12th century under Suryavarman II, Beng Mealea is enclosed by a massive moat.
You will feel like an explorer when you discover this completely overgrown & collapsed Temple. Undiscovered for centuries, Beng Mealea is now accessible to all visitors & while it remains unrestored, it is increasingly popular with tour groups.
The Temple used to be utterly consumed by jungle, but some of the dense foliage has been cut back & cleaned up in recent years. Entering from the south, visitors wend their way over piles of finely chiselled sandstone blocks, through long, dark chambers & between hanging vines. The central tower has completely collapsed, but hidden away among the rubble & foliage are several impressive carvings, as well as a well-preserved library in the northeastern quadrant. The Temple is a special place & it is worth taking the time to explore it thoroughly. The large wooden walkway to & around the centre was originally constructed for the filming of Jean-Jacques Annaud’s Two Brothers (2004), set in 1920s French Indochina & starring two tiger cubs.
Beng Mealea has a large baray to the east & some atmospheric satellite temples such as Prasat Chrey.
Apsara Authority has plans to re-flood the ancient baray, as they did earlier with Jayatataka (Northern Baray), surrounding Neak Poan Temple.
Take a break for a packed lunch & sit down to eat at a local house close to Beng Mealea Temple (packed lunch box).
Later, proceed to enjoy an interesting 2.5 hour boat trip on the Tonle Sap Lake, where you will have the opportunity to learn about life on the lake.
When people think of Cambodia they naturally think of Angkor Wat & its beautiful temples. Siem Reap is the gateway. What many don’t know is that there are a host of other things to do in the area besides Temple gazing.
You drive to Ton Le Sap Lake, the largest fresh water lake in South East Asia, is the lifeblood of the Cambodian fishing industry. The Mekong River, from as a far away as Phnom Penh, reverses the direction of the Ton Le Sap river to bring an overflow of water & silt to support both rice growing and the breeding fish of many sizes & varieties.
The “Great Lake” is the largest freshwater lake in Cambodia which became a UNESCO “biosphere” in 1997.Tonle Sap is South East Asia’s largest freshwater lake with its size varying greatly depending on the season, as it is swelling to about four times its size during the wet season. Its levels rise & fall quite dramatically with the seasons & it is shaped like musical instrument 'Violin' & its bottom like pan. Tonle Sap Lake located in the center the countries & surrounded by 5 provinces, The Mekong fills this lake with water during rainy season. It supplies foods 60% and irrigation to the Khmer society from past to present.
Embark on a boat ride through the village, moving between the floating homes & small fish farms, where the fisherman & their families live in stilted houses among the petrified mangrove forests & waterways. There are 2 ‘floating’ villages in this area, one with villagers of Vietnamese ancestry, the other Cambodian. Most of the houses are built 10 meters above the river with the help of stilts.
On the slow journey, you will experience close up, the daily lake life as you will see lots of passing boats in both directions, amidst a number of buildings, shops & homes, all hovering about the water or river banks on stilts Houses, schools, churches, Temples, shops & hairdressers, all on stilts above the water. It is quite an impressive feat of engineering. There is actually a shop for tourists where local kids are sent by their parents to wave snakes around & shout “1 dollar for photo!” These villages also have market places situated in the lake with floating vendors. Schools & health centers are available in the lands, which are utilized by the villagers.
You can tell from some of the debris in the trees along the shore that the levels must rise a quite astonishing amount around here. Occasionally a village boat would pull up alongside & the daughter or son would jump on to your boat with a basket of cans of drinks, then jump back to her moving boat & speed off to the next tourist boat!.
Then, head to a “Crocodile & Fish farm”.
Tonle Sap Lake is a rich source of fish & many other benefits of water. The fish farm provides different varieties of fishes & the chief occupation of the people who live here is fisheries. Crocodile farms & the bird sanctuaries also attract many tourists.
The crocodile & fish pens are small but filled with their respective animals. There’ is also an observation deck here where you can get a good view of the entire floating village.
But, the real reason for being on the boat is of course the sunset (if you are still cruising at that time). An almost apocalyptic sunset painting across the sky.
Return to the hotel.
Balance of the evening is at leisure to relax or explore independently (we shall be happy to offer suggestions for Optional activities & arrange).
Overnight. B
Day 04 - | Siem Reap vAngkor Thom vSiem Reap Drive: 3 km x 2
Early morning, meet the Tour-guide at 07.00 am & head to Angkor Thom, the famous walled city spread over an area of 10 sq km.
Angkor Thom was founded by King Jayavarman VII, one of the most important figures of the Khmer Empire. He was a Buddhist, & during the time of his reign, oversaw a wholesale conversion of the Khmer people from Hinduism to Buddhism. He was a great believer in public works, creating schools, hospitals & reservoirs.
Angkor Thom - the last capital of the Khmer Empire, is undeniably an expression of the highest genius. It is, in 3 dimensions & on a scale worthy of an entire nation, the materialization of Buddhist cosmology, representing ideas that only great painters would dare to portray.
Some 72 major temples or other buildings are found within this area & the remains of several hundred additional minor temple sites are scattered throughout the landscape beyond.
A fortified city enclosing residences of priest, officials of the Palace & military, as well as buildings for administering the Kingdom. These structures were built of wood & have perished but the remaining stone monuments testify that Angkor Thom was indeed a "Great City" as its name implies.
Unique, even among its cherished contemporaries, the architectural audacity was a definitive political statement about the change from Hinduism to Mahayana Buddhism.
Enter through the monumental South Gate over a causeway lined on either side by statues of demons & gods, each carrying a giant naga.
The East Gate is famous as the locale for the Angelina Jolie, Harrison Ford movie Tomb Raider, where the bad guys broke into the ‘Tomb’ by pulling down a giant polystyrene apsara. This is the most atmospheric of Angkor Thom's gates as there is no road here, just a jungle path leading to Chau Say Tevoda.
Continue to the Terrace of the Elephants & the Terrace of the Leper King, former spaces for public ceremonies, both adorned with dramatic bas reliefs.
See the many Temples within its borders. At the heart of Angkor Thom is the fascinating 12th century Temple of Bayon, state Temple which epitomises the creative genius & inflated ego of Cambodia’s most celebrated king Jayavarman VII, who built it. Future Hindu & Theravada Buddhist monarchs eventually made changes to the Temple, removing or altering several images of the Buddha.
The dense jungle surrounding the Temple camouflaged its position in relation to other structures at Angkor so it was not known for some time that the Bayon stands in the exact centre of the city of Angkor Thom.
The Bayon Temple is important because it allows us to better understand the beliefs, value & power of the Khmer Empire. The Temple was built in the exact center of Angkor Thom, which translates to “Great City,” signifying its connection with heaven & earth. Both the architecture & the carvings inside provide future generations with insight into the Temple’s history.
Known as the 'face temple' thanks to iconic visages carved in its 54 Gothic towers. These 216 gargantuan smiling heads glare down from every angle, exuding power & control with a hint of humanity, 2 essential qualities of any successful leader. The characteristics of the faces - a broad forehead, downcast eyes, wild nostrils, thick lips that curl upwards slightly at the ends-combine to reflect the famous 'Smile of Angkor'. Historians disagree on the identity of the faces - some believe they are the face of Jayavarman VII himself, while others believe they depict Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, a significant Buddhist deity who signifies the virtue of compassion. The site has become a popular destination because of the multitude of smiling, serene faces carved into the stone.
It is also adorned with almost 1.2 km of almost 11,000 extraordinary bas-reliefs in 2 Galleries. The inner one is decorated with religious & mythical scenes & depict various historical figures & events of the Khmer empire. The bas-reliefs on the outer Gallery are a marked departure from anything previously seen at Angkor. They contain genre scenes of everyday life-markets, fishing, festivals with cockfights & jugglers & history scenes with battles & processions. The relief are more deeply carved than at Angkor Wat but the representation is less stylized. The scenes are presented mostly in 2 or 3 horizontal panels.
Explore the Galleries of beautifully preserved bas reliefs & ascend narrow stairs to reach the central sanctuary, where you will find magnificent giant stone faces smiling enigmatically down at you from every angle. Some other Temples are Phimeanakas, Baphuon, Prah Palilay, Tep Pranam & Prasat Suor Prat.
The Royal Palace situated within the city is of an earlier date & belonged to Kings of the 10th - 11th centuries. Although the foundations & an enclosing wall around the Palace with Entry Towers have been identified, little evidence remains of the layout of the buildings inside the enclosure.
The French ascertained a general plan of the Royal Palace which included the temple-mountain of Phimeanakas & surrounding pools together with residences & buildings for administering the capital, which were probably at the back of the enclosure.
At the center of the Kingdom complex rise a Golden Tower flanked by more than 20 lesser towers & several hundred stone chambers. On the eastern side is a golden bridge guarded by 2 lions of gold, one on each side, with 8 golden Buddhas spaced along the stone chambers. North of the Golden Tower of Bronze (Baphuon), higher even than the Golden tower. a truly astonishing spectacle.
A quarter of a mile further north is the residence of the King rising above his private apartments is another tower of gold, These are the monuments which have caused merchants from overseas to speak so often of "Cambodia the rich & noble "
Symbolically, Angkor Thom is a microcosm of the universe, divided into 4 parts by the main axis. The wall enclosing the city of Angkor Thom represents the stonewall around the universe & the mountain ranges around Meru. The surrounding moat (now dry) symbolizes the cosmic ocean.
A long causeway leading to each entry tower is flanked by a row of 54 stone figures on each side - demons on the right & gods on the left-to make a total of 108 mythical beings guarding the city of Angkor Thom. The demons have a grimacing expression & wear a military headdress whereas the gods look serene with their almond-shaped eyes and wear a conical headdress. (Some of the heads on these figures are copies; the original ones have been removed and are at the Angkor Conservancy in Siem Reap).
The cause of the Angkor empire's demise in the early 15th century long remained a mystery. But researchers have now shown that intense monsoon rains that followed a prolonged drought in the region caused widespread damage to the city's infrastructure, leading to its collapse.
There are several beautiful spots from which to watch the sunset & the Tour-guide would take you to a vantage point. Relax & enjoy a memorable end to your day at the temples.
