Kwita Izina 2019 & Primates Experience
Africa. There's nowhere like it on the planet for wildlife, wild lands and rich traditions that endure. Prepare to fall in love. Whether you are a wide-eyed first-timer or a frequent visitor, Africa cannot fail to get under your skin.
A new dawn has risen in Rwanda, polishing a glint back into the “Land of a Thousand Hills’’ & that alone would make a visit worthwhile. Nowhere are the mountains more majestic than the Virunga volcanoes in the northwest, and hidden among the bamboo forests are some of the world's last remaining mountain gorillas. Come…let u go to meet the Gorillas,
Raw & refined, complex & simple, inspiring & troubling - Africa always has the power to confound. More than ever, intrepid travellers are making their way to Uganda & there’s little wonder why. A new dawn has risen in Uganda, polishing a glint back into the ‘pearl of Africa’ and it alone would make a dozen visits worthwhile - where else on earth can you fall asleep to the sound of lions roaring. Come, the Gorillas are waiting……let us make the introduction………
Africa offers travellers the chance to witness some of nature's grandest spectacles. The continent is famous for its vast herds of wildebeest that cross the Serengeti, rumbling families of elephants in the Chobe, and the stylishly blasé leopards of the Kruger National Park. But by far the most transformative and up-close wildlife experience in Africa is a face-to-face encounter with the great apes of Uganda & Rwanda.
The canvas upon which the continent's epic story is written is itself astonishing & reason enough to visit. From the tropical rainforests & glorious tropical coastline of Central Africa to the rippling dunes of the Namib Desert, from the signature savannah of the Serengeti to jagged mountains, green-tinged highlands & deep-gash canyons that mark the Great Rift Valley's continental traverse - wherever you find yourself on this big, beautiful continent, Africa has few peers when it comes to natural beauty.
On this continent where human beings first came into existence, customs, traditions & ancient rites tie Africans to generations & ancestors past and to the collective memory of myriad people. In many rural areas it can feel as though the modern world might never have happened & they are all the better for it, and old ways of doing things - with a certain grace & civility, hospitality & a community spirit, survive. There are time-honoured ceremonies, music that dates back to the days of Africa's golden empires & masks that tell stories of spirit worlds never lost.
A Noah's ark of wildlife brings Africa's landscapes to life, with a tangible and sometimes profoundly mysterious presence that adds so much personality to the African wild. So many of the great beasts, including elephants, hippos & lions, call Africa home. Going on safari may be something of a travel cliche, but we are yet to find a traveller who has watched the wildlife world in motion in the Masai Mara, watched the epic battles between predator & prey in the Okavango Delta, or communed with gorillas & surfing hippos in Gabon and has not been reduced to an ecstatic state of childlike wonder.
Africa’s natural history alone would make a dozen visits worthwhile - where else on earth can you fall asleep to the sound of lions roaring, or watch a million flamingos take off from the waters of a remote soda lake? Parts of Africa boast scenery so spectacular they will damn near blow your mind, but the essence of this incredible continent isn’t in any desert, mountain or lake. It is the spirit of the people - pushing, shoving, sweating, dancing, singing & laughing - that infects so many visitors with a travel bug so powerful they’ll never stop coming back, sometimes against all sense or reason.
And now, let us talk about Rwanda.
African Landscapes | Wildlife Bonanza | People & Culture
Mention Rwanda to anyone with a small measure of geopolitical conscience & that person will no doubt recall images of the horrific genocide that brutalised this tiny country in 1994. But since those dark days a miraculous transformation has been wrought & today the country is one of tribal unity, political stability & a promising future. Rwanda remains stable, tourism is once again a key contributor to the economy, and you will feel absolutely welcome.
Welcome to Le Pays des Milles Collines (Land of a Thousand Hills). Rwanda is a lush country of endless mountains & stunning scenery and nowhere are the mountains more majestic than the peaks of the Virunga volcanoes in the far northwestern Rwanda.
In Parc National Des Volcans, the volcanoes form a natural frontier with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) & Uganda & hidden among the bamboo & dense jungle of their forbidding slopes are some of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas. It is the opportunity to encounter these contemplative creatures at close quarters that continues to draw visitors to Rwanda. Experts estimate that there are only 780 - 900 mountain gorillas still in existence - & one third of those are in Rwanda.
There is more to Rwanda than magical mountain gorillas, however. The shores of Lake Kivu conceal some of the best inland beaches on the continent. Deep in the southwest, Parc National Nyungwe Forest is the most extensive montane rainforest in the region & home to many primates. But it is not all monkey business - Kigali is safe & sophisticated.
For a change of scene, the shores of Lake Kivu conceal some of the best inland beaches on the continent, while Nyungwe Forest National Park protects extensive tracts of montane rainforest, and is home to many primates.
Many visitors are unsure about travelling to Rwanda given its history. However, as long as security & stability persist, Rwanda is a refreshing country in which to travel, where tourists remain a relative novelty & the rewards of the present outweigh the risks of the past.
Gorillas make their homes in & amongst the bamboo-covered slopes of the Virunga Mountains in the Volcanoes National Park in northern Rwanda. On this Safari, from stealing magic moments with mountain-dwelling gorillas to experiencing heart-warming encounters with villagers, Rwanda will deliver experiences unlike any other. Volcanic mountains, dense forests, tranquil lakes and lively towns add a stunning backdrop to Rwanda’s real gems – the sincere, proud people and majestic, mysterious wildlife.
So, while Rwanda’s scars may run deep, now is the time to help the country look to its future and embrace its new-found optimism.
Explore this fascinating country & encounter the golden monkeys & chimpanzee. Move to neighbouring “Pearl of Africa” & track one of the rare mighty mountain gorilla family.
Commencing in Rwanda, participate in the exciting Kwita Izina festivities, where celebrities are given the honour to name the gorilla infants born in the period from September 2018 - 2019. Then, proceed to Dian Fossey's stunning Parc National des Volcans, where you will embark on a trek to encounter the golden monkeys.
Moving to Uganda now whose outstanding natural beauty & diversity of landscape in Uganda has long served as focal point of inspiration for travellers. Towering mountains give way to fertile meadows & broad savannah, while the dry uplands contrast with the swamplands of the lakeshores.
Track the mighty mountain gorilla in the UNESCO World Heritage listed Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, home to just over half the world's mountain gorilla population.
Be on the lookout for Red Colobus monkeys as you visit Uganda's most popular game reserve, Queen Elizabeth II National Park, where have the opportunity to take a boat ride amid Africa's largest hippo population.
This comfortable, fully-escorted & guided safari tour through Rwanda & Uganda features lands of rolling hills, tranquil lakes, the snow-capped 'Mountains of the Moon', rainforests & jungles, gorillas & chimps, and glorious butterflies outnumbered only by the plentiful birds.
How do you capture the essence of Africa on paper without using up every cliche in the book? No other continent comes close to it for scale, variety & pure, raw impact. A unique experience is just the beginning. Take the plunge now and Yep…. the Man…. (oops! the Ape) is waiting in Uganda & The Journeys is ready to take you on well, a journey (or journeys) of discovery.
Come……be inspired & discover the World

Welcome to enchanting Rwanda – the land of the mighty Apes.
Arrive in Kigale, the capital & largest city of Rwanda, located roughly in the center of the country.
After you exit in the Arrival Hall at Terminal? - Kigali International Airport, subsequent to Immigration & Customs, you will be welcomed by The Journeys Rep who will ensure your comfort & transfer you to the hotel, help you settle in & provide you with some useful tips for exploring the area as well as discuss the program for the next few days
Kigali, the centre of political & commercial life and with a population of more than 1 million.
Spanning several ridges & valleys, Kigali, with its lush hillsides, flowering trees, winding boulevards & bustling streets, is arguably one of the most attractive capital cities in Africa, as well as one of the cleanest & safest.
The city is developing fast & is very much a showpiece capital designed to impress visitors, from the humble tourist, to foreign investors & visiting dignitaries. The rebirth of the capital has seen a surprising measure of cosmopolitanism take hold; there is a slew of new skyscrapers, plenty of good places to eat, coffee shops, supermarkets & several international brand hotels, some lively night-time action, interesting & well-presented museums & a general buzz on the streets that leaves many a visitor picturing a very bright future for the city. Few people leave Kigali without being impressed by this plucky & charismatic survivor. And being right in the centre of the country, it is a great base from where to organise your trip around Rwanda.
It wasn’t always like this. Kigali exists as a testament to the peace & order that has defined Rwanda’s trajectory for more than two decades, though it bore the brunt of the genocide in 1994. As a clean, comfortable & ordered city, Kigali is very popular with long term expats, and the city is teeming with westerners, from young church or NGO volunteers having their first experience of Africa to career development workers enjoying a relaxed lifestyle where it is safe to bring up young children. Kigali’s modern design & popularity with foreigners is that it is easy to forget you are in Africa.
Check-in at the hotel.
After relaxing for a while, meet the Journeys Rep & proceed to Red Rocks Cultural Center & Exhibition Village, the venue of the Kwita Izina, inspired by the ancient Rwandan tradition of naming babies soon after they are born.
Names evoke feelings of emotional attachment & connection Naming a new-born baby & making it a celebration, has been part of Rwandan tradition & culture for centuries.
Recognising the importance of names in Rwandan culture, the government of Rwanda & the Rwandan Development Board (RDB) have used naming ceremonies - known as Kwita Izina (“to give a name”) - to promote the protection of Rwanda’s mountain gorillas & to ease the monitoring of each mountain gorilla. The babies are picked from different gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park which has a total of 10 gorilla families & is also home to the highest population of gorillas in the Virunga conservation area.
Little awareness & exposure was given to gorilla naming in Rwanda. Prior to 2005, when the ceremony started to become the spectacle we know today, the naming of baby gorillas was done amongst researchers & rangers that closely monitor these animals on a daily basis.
The week long Kwita Izina festivities include a number of events leading up to the main Ceremony, including a gala Fundraising dinner, a Conservation & Tourism exhibition and the two-day “Conversation on Conservation” Conference at Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village.
The Exhibition showcases Rwanda’s work in conservation activities, while the Conference brings delegates from around the world to discuss Africa’s common conservation challenges & find solutions for preserving critical ecosystems. Topics include conservation in the face of climate change & engaging youth in conservation and always includes staff from the Fossey Fund.
The infant gorillas born in the past year will receive their names during the special Celebration in Kinigi section at Volcanoes National Park. The Naming of 14 Infants last year were extra special because they included four adult females who traveled into Rwanda from unhabituated groups in Congo & a new Group was formed.
Launched in 2005, Kwita Izina, a uniquely Rwandan event, is not only a celebration of newly born mountain gorilla babies, but also serves to raise awareness of the importance of the protection of species & their habitats at community, national, regional & international levels. Rwanda is the only destination where gorillas & thousands of travelers both locals & internationals travel to Rwanda to witness this event
The ceremony attracts a high number of friends of Rwanda, both travelers, conservationists, researchers & celebrities and local people to enjoy this joyful moment. Last year’s Kwita Izina saw almost 500 international & 20,000 local attendees.
Naming a mountain gorilla baby is considered a great honour. Baby Namers are carefully chosen to include individuals both globally & locally that have made a great contribution to conservation efforts both in Rwanda and the world. The Ceremony also features cultural performances & renditions from local entertainers.
In the 12 years since the event was established, 258 + mountain gorilla babies have been named in a celebration of nature together with the communities who protect the majestic mountain gorillas. Each baby is given a different name based on the circumstance in which it was born, the future expectations and the location it was born.
Return to the hotel.
Day 3 - 03 September Tuesday | Kigali v Parc National des Volcans Drive: 114 km
Morning, Check-out & meet the Tour-guide in the Lobby at 08.00 am & proceed on a 3 hour sightseeing tour, visiting some of Kigali’s outstanding historical & cultural sites.
You will have a memorable visit to the 1994 Gisozi Genocide Memorial site, documenting the mass killings, associated with the country’s civil war. The Kigali Memorial is the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, an emotional experience for most visitors as they encounter the horrid massacre that engulfed the entire country. The Center is a permanent memorial to the victims & serves as a place in which the bereaved could bury their family & friends, and a clear reminder of the cost of ignorance. In the Museum there, learn the history of Kigali & Rwanda’s pre-colonial & colonial period as well as the colonial masters in Rwanda
Check out the local arts & crafts shops, in the city’s Caplaki Crafts Village which has stalls selling traditional handicrafts, including woodcarvings & woven baskets.
Visit Juru Park - one of the highest points in Kigali to have fantastic views of the city and its surrounding hills & countryside.
After enjoying lunch in the city centre, depart for Parc National des Volcans, driving through Rwanda’s phenomenal landscapes.
Arrive by late afternoon & Check-in at the Lodge.
“In the heart of Central Africa, so high up that you shiver more than you sweat, are great, old volcanoes towering up almost 15,000 feet & nearly covered with rich, green rainforest - the Virungas" wrote the eminent primatologist Dian Fossey.
Situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, the Volcanoes National Park or Parc National des Volcans (or PNV as it is known by locals) along the magnificent Virunga Mountains, with 8 ancient volcanoes, which are shared by Rwanda, Uganda & Democratic Republic of Congo, is the home of the rare mountain gorilla & the rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen & bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp & heath. This corner of northwestern Rwanda is a breath-taking unforgettable place where culture, adventure & conservation intersect and is a central location for exploring some distinctly Rwandan experiences.
We probably needn't remind you, but of all the extraordinary sights & attractions around the Virungas the one that really draws people here, are the mountain gorillas, which were first studied in depth by primatologist George Schaller & later thrust into the international spotlight during the life of Dian Fossey. Visitors can pay homage to the legendary scientist & gorilla advocate Dian Fossey with a hike to her tomb or a contribution to the Dian Fosse Gorilla Fund that continues her legacy of research & advocacy to this day.
The mysterious rainforest is alive with the calls of colourful birds & chattering of the rare golden monkey, and littered with fresh spoor of the mountains’ elusive populations of buffalo & elephant. Through gaps in the forest canopy, the magnificent peaks are glimpsed, easily accessible & among the highest in Africa, beckoning an ascent.
Near the Park, the bustling & vibrant markets of Musanze are a place to immerse yourself into everyday Rwandan culture. Go deep into the earth with Musanze's Caves - one of the area's newest attractions.
While most tourists to the park are understandably driven by the desire to have a face-to-face encounter with real mountain gorillas in the mist, there is good reason to stay in the area once you have finished tracking: the gorillas share the park with the fascinating rare golden monkeys, a troop of which has also been habituated to human contact.
The Virungas, which tower over Rwanda, Uganda & the DRC, also present a variety of rewarding climbing & trekking options. To get the most from the Virungas, give yourself as much time as you possibly can. This is absolutely a park that rewards those who linger.
Balance of the day is at leisure.
You can take a walk to Ruhengeri Market, providing you with an opportunity to interact with the local people. Check out the local Rwandan fabrics, foods, arts & handicrafts. Or enjoy an (optional – extra payment) guided visit to Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village.
Overnight. B L D
Day 4 - 04 September Wednesday | Parc Nat. Des Volcans vBwindi NP Drive: 134 km
Early morning, meet the Ranger & proceed to the Park’s Kinigi Headquarters before 7.00 am for a Golden Monkey trekking briefing.
There are only 3 countries where you can see the endangered Golden Monkeys in the wild & Volcanoes National Park is one of the prime destinations. There are only about 5000 remaining in the Virunga Volcanoes Chain.
A rare primate species, they are small in size, get their name from the long golden hair on their backs & are found in the high altitude Bamboo Forests of the Park.
They have been declared an endangered species & even protected their number seems to be declining.
Like the Mountain Gorillas of Volcanoes National Park, the habituated attractive looking monkeys with color, their playful ways, are used to human beings & will not scamper off when approached by visitors. Flitting around in the Bamboo Forest, they are a delight to those who have come to track & observe them.
Embark on a thrilling 4 hour trek to track the Monkeys. Once you come across a habituated family, you are allowed to spend the allowed 1 hour with them as they go about their daily life.
There are two habituated Golden Monkey Groups presently that can be tracked in Volcanoes National Park, ranging up to 100 members in each group, which is quite a sight to behold when you are up close to them (a bit of advice is in picture -taking - they move rather quickly & you will need to set your camera on fast shutter speed & due to the bamboo forest on low light setting).
The enchanting experience comes to an end & you return to the Lodge.
Relax at the Lodge & after enjoying lunch, get ready to depart for Bwindi National Park.
Cross the border post into Uganda.
Arrive at the Park by late afternoon & Check-in at the Lodge.
The 331 sq. km swath of steep mountains covered in thick, steamy jungle, UNESCO World Heritage listed Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a magnificent biodiverse area in southwest Uganda. As names go, there is hardly a more evocative African destination than the Impenetrable Forest of Bwindi, one of Africa’s most ancient habitats, even surviving the last Ice Age as most of the continent's other forests disappeared.
Within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, there are 4 different areas where you can track the mountain gorillas, and they include Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga & Nkuringo, each with specialized accommodation close to the tracking area The combination of its broad altitude span (1160m to 2607m) & its antiquity has produced an incredible diversity of flora & fauna, resulting in some 120 mammal species & over 350 bird species calling Bwindi home. The Park’s rough paths weave amid dense forests, which are home to many butterflies & birds. The forest itself is lush & green and there are streams running through it.
The stars of the show, however, are approximately 400+ of the world’s remaining rare mountain gorillas, who feed on roots, leaves & fruits from the park’s many tree & fern species. Apart from gorillas, there are a wide variety of primates to see including chimpanzees and the blue & red tailed monkeys. This forest in the Virunga Mountains protects about half of the world's estimated remaining 900 mountain gorillas,
This is one of the best places in the world to see mountain gorillas up close. Having a look at these critically endangered creatures up close is an unforgettable experience - don't miss it.
Balance of the day is at leisure.
If time permits, enjoy a guided Nature Walk, which will lead you to the beautiful Munyaga Waterfall within the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and a chance to see primates such as the Grey Cheeked Mangabey Blue Monkeys and others species. You will also wander around the local village.
Overnight. B L D
Day 5 - 05 September Thursday | Bwindi National Park
Arise early today & prepare for the highlight of your safari, an unforgettable encounter with the Gentle Giants !
Today is your big day – the raison d'etre – of coming to Uganda.
No other wildlife encounter in Africa matches the astounding experience of spending time face-to-face with wild gorillas. Trekking takes place in a handful of far flung locations, adding a layer of exotic adventure to these safaris that is hard to match on any other itinerary. The fact that gorillas as a species are on the brink of extinction & treks are a highly restricted activity, encountering wild gorillas is considered a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience.
Mountain gorillas are on the brink of extinction & trekking is carefully regulated. Permits are both costly & difficult to secure and cannot be held on a provisional basis
Meet the Ranger at 06.00 am & proceed (with packed water & other relevant accessories) to the Headquarter for Registration - a simple process where the Park staff asses your fitness level to determine which Gorilla Family you will visit. Treks vary in duration depending on which Gorilla group you are assigned to.
Then you sit down for a comprehensive & mandatory 30 minute briefing introducing travelers to trekking rules & regulations, which ensure smooth gorilla encounters & safety of mountain gorillas in the presence of tourists. No traveler is allowed to proceed further if he / she do not show up at the briefing point. Visitors & Rangers are also informed about locations of the various groups in the previous evening.
After travelers have been introduced to the dos & don’ts with the gorillas, they are put together in groups of 8 people. There are a total of 24 gorilla permits available each day with a maximum of 8 trekkers visiting any one group. Guests are expected to disclose their hiking ability, based on age & the physical fitness, to their Guide so as to be assigned to a specific Gorilla family. The hikes are categorized as short, medium & long depending on the ease and difficulty of finding mountain gorillas. Travelers with limited physical fitness are given short treks to avoid any difficulties in hiking while the adventurous ones are given long treks which help them to discover & enjoy more.
Travelers are offered a cup of coffee to keep them warm in the early cold mornings. Also, there is a traditional dance during the briefing, which rewards them with extensive cultural knowledge making the whole safari a memorable experience.
Travelers are checked thoroughly to ensure that they are in a fit condition to see these endangered species. Gorilla Permits & Passports are strictly checked to accurately verify name, date of birth, nationality & other relevant information to ensure there is no forgery. Travelers are therefore reminded to bring all relevant documents, including medical, that provide detailed information about them.
Please note that gorillas are very susceptible to human diseases & you should advise the Ranger if you are suffering from a cold or anything similar. It would be irresponsible to risk the health of even one of the last 900 remaining mountain gorillas that are still living in their natural habitat.
And, now you are ready to roll. Accompanied by the Park staff & your new partners, you are driven to the Trailheads where the hiking & trekking up the hills to the bamboo zone begins.
Tracking Gorillas and meeting & staying with these giant apes is worth the effort.
However, trekking for gorillas in mountainous rainforest that may reach altitudes of almost 2000 metres above sea level, is very strenuous & often means hours of hiking on steep, narrow footpaths & walking through dense jungle behind a scout who slashes a path through the foliage with a machete. Depending on weather conditions, some of the paths can be slippery & these paths themselves can change depending on the location of the gorillas. Hence it is very hard to predict how long we need to walk for, but a very good level of fitness is recommended for everyone taking on this trek. You need to be at least walking fit - the guides ensure you take plenty of breaks - and properly equipped for a tough environment. Tacking may take 2-7 hours, depending on their movements.
Once your assigned Gorilla family is located, your Ranger will ask you to leave everything but your camera. He will then take you close enough to observe the gorillas intimately but without threatening them. There are no fences between you, only mutual respect. The gorillas are habituated to human observers and go about their natural business - foraging, grooming & napping - without fear. Indeed, the youngsters are often curious about humans & have a very playful attitude that tests the patience of their teenage gorilla babysitters. The placid nature of the gorilla family is wonderful to see but remember that your presence is shrewdly observed by the patriarch of the family: the massive silverback male.
Sitting a few metres away from a family of gorillas, seeing your humanity reflected in their social rituals & warm brown eyes, makes for one of the most transformative & intimate wild encounters you can have in Africa, if not the world.
You are likely to get within metres of the family you are tracking. Each gorilla safari encounter is different and has its own rewards, but you are likely to enjoy the close view of adults feeding, grooming and resting as the youngsters frolic and swing from vines in a delightfully playful display
You are allowed to stay with these gentle gorillas for 1 hour to observe & photograph as they go about their daily life - feeding, moving, playing, raising their young & sometimes wrestling by the juveniles.
Head back down the volcano slopes & return to the lodge in time for lunch or a picnic lunch on the Trek, may be arranged.
Balance of the day is at leisure.
Overnight. B L D
Day 6 - 06 September Friday | Bwindi NP v Queen Elizabeth NP Drive: 206 km
Early morning, depart for Queen Elizabeth National Park.
On arrival by early afternoon, Check-in at the lodge.
Shortly after, depart for Queen Elizabeth National Park, a stunning reserve that covers almost 2000 square kilometres, driving along the deep and wide dry craters that are occupied by savanna grasses & acacia through the unique western rift valley escarpment and the (southern part of the Park) Ishasha sector.
One of the most popular parks in Uganda, Queen Elizabeth National Park is sometimes dubbed the 'Pearl of Africa' or the 'Switzerland of Africa' due to its amazing array of habitats. Few Reserves in the world can boast such a high biodiversity rating & with landscapes including savannah, bushland, wetlands & lush forests.
The grassland plain supports a variety of wildlife safari animals which can be viewed from a vehicle on the network of designated tracks in the park. Queen Elizabeth National Park contains the most astonishing number of species with almost 606 types of birds & 100 types of mammals including healthy numbers of hippos, elephants, lions & leopards as well as chimps & hyenas. Whilst rhinoceros, giraffe, zebra & impala are not encountered here, the other main species are all present along with some rare ones such as Ugandan kob, sitatunga (a brown antelope with white stripes and spiral horns), giant forest hog and topi.
The savannah woodland covered remote Ishasha sector along Ishasha River & Lake Edward, in the far south of the park, has a diversity of wildlife such as the famous tree-climbing lions; these females, who enjoy spending the long, hot afternoons snoozing photogenically in fig trees, are the most memorable sight in the entire park which is also known to host the world’s highest concentration of hippos.
Geographers will say that the park has around 57 vegetation but in actual sense, it has five levels of vegetation. Namely bushy grassland, Acacia woodland, Lakeshore or swamp vegetation along with forest grassland
Two lakes connected by a channel are set in front of a high peninsula, complete with volcanic craters, whilst grassy plains and tropical rainforest result in a fertile equatorial area that is equally scenic, but in different ways.
Later in the afternoon, proceed for a 2 hour scenic cruise on the Kazinga channel, a natural & pre-historic canal that joins Lakes Edward & Lake George. 33 kilometers long & 2 to 3 km at its widest points, the Kazinga channel was formed by tectonic activity millions of years ago during the formation of the rift valleys.
Kazinga channel encompasses North Kazinga as well as Kasenyi & it has the perfect view of the Parks’ major wildlife ventures. The shores of the lake attract a large concentration of mammals, birds as well as reptiles all year around. A delight for birdwatchers with many species that can be sighted, including the very peculiar shoebill (or whale-headed) stork, which stands over one metre in height! ,
The plains of channel are focal points for game viewing & tracking is the only way that will enable you see all the wildlife that dwell in the grassland thickets of the Northern Kazinga close to Mweya. Guests are almost always guaranteed excellent wildlife sightings including, multitudes of hippopotamus (possibly the world’s highest concentration), Nile crocodiles, wallowing buffaloes on its reedy banks, elephants, multitudes of birds including many endemics as well as hundreds of other plains game that come to it for water all day long. You will also have the opportunity to see a variety of, zebras, the Uganda-kobs, topis, water bucks, bush bucks, reed bucks, duiker, mongoose, swamp antelopes, spotted hyena, warthog, forest hog.
Come back to the Lodge.
Balance of the day is at leisure or perhaps, you may opt to choose one of the optional activities offered here.
Overnight. B L D
Day 7 - 07 September Saturday | Queen Elizabeth National Park
Start early today & accompanied by the local Ranger, proceed for a full day Game Drive, in search of tree climbing lions that like to rest on the branches of the large fig trees.
Drive along the Queen’s Mile plus the Kasenyi trail where in the grasslands, you will see elephants, water bucks, lions, buffaloes, leopard, hyena, giant forest hog, Uganda Kobs plus warthogs in addition to several birds.
Enjoy a picnic lunch enroute.
Come back to the lodge.
Balance of the day is at leisure or perhaps, you may opt to choose one of the optional activities offered here.

Day 8 - 08 September Sunday | Queen Elizabeth NP v Gisenyi Drive: 353 km
Morning after breakfast, depart for Gisenyi, a wonderful place to relax, having a captivating feel of a tropical beach resort and a great place to unwind before or after your trekking adventures.
Cross the border line & move back to Rwanda.
Arrive by afternoon & Check-in at the resort.
If you are surprised that Rwanda has a beach - you are not alone. Gisenyi (also known as Rubavu) is a waterfront town located on the shores of Lake Kivu, one Africa's great bodies of water, right on the border with the DRC, one of Rwanda's loveliest spots & the closest this landlocked country has to a beach resort.
With some attractive stretches of sand fringed with all manner of tropical vegetation along Lake Kivu's long shore, Gisenyi is unsurprisingly a popular destination for wealthy Rwandans, expats & independent travellers alike. The town itself projects a languid air of some forgotten upcountry backwater & that is part of its appeal. Beach resorts line the lake’s sandy waterfront & kayaks ply its clear waters.
From Gisenyi, the long-distance, lakeside Congo Nile Trail winds through hilly terrain, passing villages, waterfalls and tea and coffee plantations. If crave some more adventure, you may go on a boat tour, take a kayak excursion on majestic Lake Kivu or hit the Congo Nile Trail on foot or bicycle.
Gisenyi is also known for its Agro tourism experiences, with many Tea & Coffee plantations nearby. Coffee enthusiasts can see how coffee is grown & made in to a delicious cup of famous Rwandan coffee.
And not far, is Rwanda’s own ‘Bay of Islands’ where many uninhabited islands are covered with natural woodland and even a remarkable colony of bats. East of town, Gishwati-Mukura National Park’s rainforests are home to chimpanzees & monkeys.
Balance of the day is at leisure to relax or for independent exploration (we will be happy to offer suggestions .or make arrangements).

Day 9 - 09 September Monday | Gisenyi vNyungwe Forest NP Drive: 200 km
Morning, meet The Journeys rep & walk to the lakeshore to enjoy a kayak sail.
Come back to the hotel or continue exploring on your own.
In time, depart for Nyungwe Forest National Park, driving through lush forests & un-ending green tea fields with stunning views.
Check-in on arrival.
Quite simply, Nyungwe Forest National Park is Rwanda’s most important area of biodiversity & covers one of the oldest rainforests in Africa.
Nyungwe’s strongest draw is the chance to track chimpanzees, which have been habituated over the years to human visits. Hiking through equatorial rainforest in search of our closest genetic cousin is an unparalleled experience that more than a few people rate above tracking the mountain gorillas. However, compared to the other big-name chimpanzee parks, the apes of Nyungwe are far & away the most timid.
While chimps tend to garner most of the spotlight in Nyungwe, sightings of habituated troops of other monkeys - Angolan colobus (troops of which number up to 400), Dent’s monkey (a local race of blue monkey) & grey-cheeked Mangabeys (the last two often seen together) - are virtually guaranteed on guided walks.
Other monkey possibilities from 12 species of primate, include l’Hoest’s & diademed monkeys, which sometimes associate with colobus & Blue Monkeys. Olive baboons & Vervet Monkeys loiter near the park’s eastern edge, while owl-faced monkeys & possibly golden monkeys live in the extensive bamboo stands in the southeastern part of the reserve. Nocturnal prosimian attractions include needle-clawed & greater Galagos as well as the Potto.
In addition to primates, you also have a fairly good chance of spotting some of the 75 different species of mammals, particularly in and around Kamiranzovu Marsh. Marsh mongooses & Congo clawless otters stick to the water’s edge, while giant forest hogs, bush pigs & duikers are sometimes startled along the trails. Rainforest squirrels are also commonly spotted, and include giant forest, montane sun and Boehm’s bush squirrels.
Nocturnal mammals are a bit tricky to spot, but you do have a chance of running across jackals, civets & genets.
But for many, though, the real highlight of Nyungwe turns out to be the simple pleasure of hiking for hours along well-maintained trails over the lush, green valleys of the rainforest & passing through enormous stands of hardwoods, up to waterfalls & through large marshes.
Check-in on arrival, by afternoon in time for lunch.
Balance of the day is at leisure.

Day 10 - 10 September Tuesday | Nyungwe Forest National Park
Early morning around 04:00 am, accompanied by a Ranger, embark on a game drive, tracking the chimpanzee & other primates most likely to be seen early in the morning.
The home of roughly 400 species of chimpanzees, Nyungwe is one of East Africa's last intact populations & boasts two wild chimp communities that welcome guests (one in Cyamdungo & other around Uwinka).
Thus, it is not surprising that Chimpanzee tracking is a popular activity in Nyungwe (especially when the park's trees are in full bloom during the summer) as well-trained Guides often lead visitors through the Park's forests. And while actually viewing chimpanzees is not guaranteed, you will enjoy learning about these creatures & their natural habitats from your Guides..
Return to the lodge in time for lunch.
Later in the afternoon, embark on yet another adventure.
Accompanied by a Journeys Rep, proceed to the Forest to enjoy a 2 hour Canopy Walk, 60m above the forest floor, which offers a splendid view over the lush forest with its magnificent biodiversity. Hard wood trees dominate the upper canopy while the lower part is beautified with a large selection of orchids, flora & fauna that flourish better in the higher altitudes. In addition, the beautiful scenery large, centuries old trees and the added thick forest, and this extra ordinary tropical forest is also shelter to a 200m canopy walk way that will give you an excitement that can hardly be compared by anything else.
The forest is on a mountain & the hike is also slippery due to the mere fact that the ground on which the guests trek is wet. Viewing the canopy on arrival, most especially for those that are fear heights, this could also be described as the endless walk to hell.
Apart from the freshness in the air & the wonderful aerial view of the trees, you will also enjoy the sights of the fantastic birds that fly across as you enjoy the walk.
This 90m long canopy walk is the only one of its kind in east Africa & the third on the African continent. It hangs across a steep valley that is filled with thick forest. The Walk gives breathtaking views across the misty forest & the sightings at the eye level of the variety of wildlife that live in the canopy.
You first walk 200m along the forest trail under the thick canopies for an opportunity of viewing ‘nature’ at the ground level before reaching the commencing point for the Canopy Walk. The prominent sightings here include; the monkeys, including the blue monkeys, L’Hoest monkeys, black & white colobus, the red tailed monkeys and the birds.
For people who do not want to go up, The Park offers many trails into the different parts of the forest for the hikers & the walkers, with different ‘difficulty’ levels. There is also a network of the ten mud trails that takes you deep into the heart of the forest.
Balance of the day is at leisure. We suggest a cultural walk among the local communities where you will get to know more about the local cultures & be entertained with local dances & music.
