Canada …& you never thought about it…..
Eastern Canada Kaleidoscope
More than ever, intrepid travellers are making their way to Canada & there’s little wonder why. Canada is more than its hulking-mountain, craggy-coast good looks: it also cooks extraordinary meals, rocks cool culture, & unfurls wild, moose-spotting road trips. Never fails to conjure up a myriad of feelings, images & a sense of mystery. Whether it’s your first visit or 5th, Canada is so big, so diverse and so fast-changing, it’s always an adventure. Come……experience Canada with us…….
The globe's second-biggest country has an endless variety of landscapes. Stretching from the U.S. in the south to the Arctic Circle in the north, is filled with vibrant cities including massive, multicultural Toronto; predominantly French-speaking Montreal & Quebec City; Vancouver & Halifax on the Pacific & Atlantic coasts, respectively; and Ottawa, the capital. It is also crossed by the Rocky Mountains & is home to vast swaths of protected wilderness.
Sky-high mountains, glinting glaciers, spectral rainforests & remote beaches are all here, spread across six times zones. It's the backdrop for plenty of ah-inspiring moments - and for a big provincial menagerie. That is big as in polar bears, grizzly bears, whales & everyone's favorite here, moose.
The terrain also makes for a fantastic playground. Whether it's snowboarding on Whistler's mountains, surfing Nova Scotia's swells or kayaking the white-frothed South Nahanni River in the Northwest Territories, adventures abound. There are gentler options, too, like strolling Vancouver's Stanley Park or swimming off Prince Edward Island's pink-sand beaches.
Sip a cafe au lait and tear into a flaky croissant at a sidewalk bistro in Montreal; head to an Asian night market & slurp noodles in Vancouver; join a wild-fiddling Celtic party on Cape Breton Island; kayak between rainforest-cloaked Aboriginal villages on Haida Gwaii: Canada is incredibly diverse across its breadth & even within its cities. You will hear it in the music, see it in the arts & taste it in the cuisine.
Canada is also a local food smorgasbord. If you grazed from west to east across the country, you would fill your plate like this: wild salmon & velvety scallops in British Columbia, poutine (golden fries topped with gravy & cheese curds) in Quebec, and lobster with a dab of melted butter in the Maritime provinces. Tastemakers may not tout Canadian food the way they do, say, Italian or French fare, so let us just call the distinctive seafood, piquant cheeses and fresh, seasonal fruits & veggies our little secret. Ditto for the bold reds & crisp whites produced from the country's vine-striped valleys.
You would be blown away by Canada's vastness, its enormous open landscapes. You can drive for hours in many areas and see almost no one. You will love that Canada's wildlife spotting is for real - moose, bears, whales - you will see them if you go looking. You would like Canada’s most popular restaurant - Tim Hortons - is a doughnut shop named after a hockey player & gradually being found in foreign lands.
On this short break, catch a glimpse of the Canadian smorgasbord in multicultural Toronto, French Montreal & Quebec City & Saint-Sauveur-des-Montsv & of course, the iconic Niagara Falls.
Breathtaking & stupendous scenery. Plus great food & idyllic scenery are just the beginning……. Take the plunge now and yep….Canada is waiting. A warm welcome awaits you and The Journeys is ready to take you on well, a journey (or journeys) of discovery.
Come……be inspired & discover the World with us

The Journey begins. Welcome to enchanting Canada. After you exit in the Arrival Hall at Terminal? - Toronto - Lester B Pearson Airport, subsequent to customs & immigration, you will be met by The Journeys representative (holding a placard displaying “Welcome to KulturenLeben GmbH Guests”) who will ensure your comfort & transfer you to Niagara Falls where you will spend your first night.
Canada, stretching from the U.S. in the south to the Arctic Circle in the north, is filled with vibrant cities including massive, multicultural Toronto; predominantly French-speaking Montreal and Quebec City; Vancouver and Halifax on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, respectively; and Ottawa, the capital. There are gentler options, too, like strolling Vancouver's Stanley Park or swimming off Prince Edward Island's pink-sand beaches.
The arts are an integral part of Canada's cultural landscape, from the International Fringe Theater Festival (the world's second-largest) in Edmonton to mega museums like Ottawa's National Gallery. Montreal's Jazz Festival and Toronto's star-studded Film Festival draw global crowds. And did you know Ontario's Stratford Festival is the continent's largest classical repertory theater? Even places you might not automatically think of – say St John's or Woody Point - put on renowned shindigs (an avant-garde 'sound symposium' and a big-name writers festival respectively).
Canada is a local food smorgasbord. If you grazed from west to east across the country, you'd fill your plate like this: wild salmon and velvety scallops in British Columbia, poutine (golden fries topped with gravy and cheese curds) in Quebec, and lobster with a dab of melted butter in the Maritime province. Tastemakers may not tout Canadian food the way they do, say, Italian or French fare, so let's just call the distinctive seafood, piquant cheeses, and fresh, seasonal fruits and veggies our little secret. Ditto for the bold reds and crisp whites produced from the country's vine-striped valleys.
The breathtaking four-seasonal palette of Ontario's vast wilderness, endless forests and abundant wildlife, awaits. Almost 40% of Canada’s population lives here for good reason: Ontario is larger than France and Spain combined. Over 250,000 lakes contain a third of the planet's fresh water.
Most Ontarians call behemoth Toronto or Ottawa, the nation's cosmopolitan capital, home. Foodies, fashionistas & funsters converge on Toronto's vibrant multicultural neighborhoods. Both cities have hopping arts & entertainment scenes, kept current by the neighborly influences of New York & Montreal.
On arrival at the Skyline Inn in Niagara Falls, Check-in & relax.
Located in the heart of North America’s most affluent consumer market, Niagara Falls is a dynamic, internationally renowned city with a prosperous business community.
Niagara Falls in Ontario, is a Canadian city located on the western bank of the Niagara River in the Golden Horseshoe region. Across the border / Niagara River is Niagara Falls, New York, linked with the U.S. by the Rainbow Bridge.
The city is dominated by the Niagara Falls, a world-famous set of three large waterfalls on the Niagara River. Its site overlooks the Horseshoe Falls, the cascades' most expansive section. The American & Horseshoe Falls can be best seen from the Canadian side of the river, so the city has one of the world's major tourist attractions.
This area, which stretches along the Niagara Parkway & tourist promenade, is particularly concentrated at the brink of the falls. Elevators take visitors to a lower, wetter vantage point behind the falls. The natural spectacle attracts millions of tourists yearly.
Apart from the river's natural attractions, it includes observation towers, high-rise hotels, souvenir shops, casinos and theatres, mostly with colourful neon billboards and advertisements. A cliff-side park features a promenade alongside 520-ft.-high Skylon Tower with an observation deck.
There is a vast array of year-round activities, featuring beautifully-maintained biking & walking trails in the world-famous Niagara gorge with numerous ball diamonds, playing fields, swimming pools & skating rinks. Further to the north or south, golf courses are operated alongside historic sites from the War of 1812.
Later in the evening, accompanied by the Tour-guide, proceed to Table Rock Welcome Centre, located at the brink of the mighty Canadian Horseshoe Falls offering exceptional views from the top of the Falls & an opportunity to capture some terrific photos.
Then, you will take the elevators 775 feet above the Falls to the Observation Deck of the Skylon Tower. Here, you will enjoy a Welcome Dinner while taking in the breathtaking views.
Transfer back to the hotel. Overnight. D
Day 2 - 17 October Tuesday | Niagara Falls vToronto Drive: 128 km
Morning around 08.30 am, hop on the bus for the short drive to the beautiful village of Niagara-on-the-Lake., famous as the location for the internationally acclaimed Shaw Theatre Festival. Discover a small but thriving community, proud to display a carefully preserved 19th century atmosphere. Spend the time, wandering through the unique boutiques & antique shops in this quaint old town in the heart of Ontario’s wine country.
Around 12.00 noon, head back to Niagara Falls and marvel at the relentless power and beauty of the Niagara River.
Niagara is not the tallest of waterfalls (it ranks a lowly 50th) but in terms of sheer volume, there's nothing like it – more than a million bathtubs of water plummet downward every second. By day or night, regardless of season, the falls never fail to awe: 12 million visitors annually can't be wrong. No wonder Niagara Falls has long been a magnet for daredevils, sightseers & honeymooners. Even in winter, when the flow is partially hidden and the edges freeze solid, the watery extravaganza is undiminished. Very occasionally the falls stop altogether. This first happened on Easter Sunday morning in 1848, when ice completely jammed the flow.
An unstoppable flow of rushing water surges over the arcing fault in the riverbed with thunderous force. Great plumes of icy mist rise for hundreds of meters as the waters collide, like an ethereal veil concealing the vast rift behind the torrent. Thousands of onlookers delight in the spectacle every day, drawn by the force of the current & the hypnotic mist.
Enjoy a “White Water Walk” deep in the Niagara Gorge.
A walk like no other, along a boardwalk at the very edge of one of the world's wildest stretches of white water! Marvel at the relentless power & beauty of nature, and see how the deep & narrow Great Gorge was created. Trillions of gallons of water are forced into this accelerating trough - the sight will take your breath away!
First, you will ride an elevator down 70 metres, then walk along a 73 metre tunnel to the boardwalk 305 metres (1,000 feet or ¼ mile) with stairs that lead to two Observation areas at the edge of the river.
As the water travels through the Whirlpool Rapids at White Water Walk, it is traveling at about 48 km / hr or 30 mph, creating the Class 6 Whirlpool Rapids. The Whirlpool Rapids consist of four km of three to five metre standing waves, making this stretch of whitewater the largest / finest series of standing waves in North America.
The site also provides visitors with an excellent view of the 410-million-year-old rock layers of the Niagara Gorge. The Whirlpool Aero Car offers visitors the only opportunity to look directly into the eye of this gigantic whirlpool.
Then, get ready for another thrilling experience to enjoy Niagara Falls. Hop aboard a state-of-the-art Hornblower Niagara Cruise catamaran for a “Voyage to the Falls Experience”.
Experience the thundering roar, awesome power of Niagara, getting as close as possible to the breathtaking flow of water, power & mist that is the magnificent Niagara Falls. Within the Niagara Great Gorge, you will journey past the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls & into the very heart of the famous Horseshoe Falls.
Later, you can walk around on your own and stay there as long as you want.
Balance of the afternoon is at leisure.
Perhaps, you might want to take a stroll in the Downtown area & enjoy Lunch in one of the many eateries there.
Niagara might not be what you expect: the town feels like a tacky outdated amusement park. It has been a saucy honeymoon destination ever since Napoleon's brother brought his bride here - tags like 'For newlyweds & nearly deads' and 'Viagra Falls' are apt. A crass morass of casinos, sleazy motels, tourist traps & strip joints line Clifton Hill and Lundy's Lane - a Little Las Vegas! Love it or loathe it, there is nowhere quite like it.
Wander along Niagara’s famous Clifton Hill offering many choices for dinner. Clifton Hill also features many fun attractions including the Niagara Skywheel, Galaxy Mini-golf, Movieland Wax Museum, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum & much more.
In time, depart for Toronto.
Welcome to Toronto, the most multi culturally diverse city on the planet: over 140 languages are spoken. The flavors, aromas, sights and sounds of almost every nation converge peacefully in the streets of Toronto's many neighborhoods: microcosms of culture thriving in a somewhat hazy 'bigger picture' that proud locals defend regardless. You're likely to feel accepted here: it's estimated that over half of Toronto's residents were born outside Canada and despite its complex make-up, Torontonians generally get along.
When the weather is fine, Toronto is a blast: a vibrant, big-time city abuzz with activity: some of the world's finest restaurants, happening bars, clubs and eclectic festivals are found here. At the height of summer, humid downtown neighborhoods become an endless convergence of patios bursting at the seams: alfresco is the way to drink and dine. Locals lap up every last drop of sunshine, beer or martini while they can. Winter in Toronto, however, can be a real drag. Things get messy on the web of unacceptably congested highways.
Come with patience, an open mind and during the delightfully temperate and colorful spring or fall, and you're bound to have a great time. Whatever you're looking for, you're almost certain to be able to find it - eventually - in Toronto.
Day 3 - 18 October Wednesday | Toronto
Wake up in downtown Toronto. This dynamic, multicultural city offers world class museums, art galleries, shopping & green parks all in the shadows of the iconic CN Tower.
Full day is at leisure exploring this exciting metropolis on your own (we will be happy to offer suggestions & make arrangements for one of the many Optional activities available). Overnight. B
Day 4 - 19 October Thursday | TorontovThousand Islands vOttawa Drive:280 + 150 km
Morning at around 07.00 am, depart for Ottawa.
Enroute, stop at Kingston - gateway to the beautiful Thousand Islands region.
The 1000 Islands (pronounced “Thousand Islands,” not “One Thousand Islands”) is a sightseer’s paradise and a popular destination for those looking for an authentic outdoor vacation. The Thousand Islands are a group of over 1,800 islands in the St. Lawrence River, straddling the border of the U.S. and Canada in a region of endless shorelines, rich history and unique culture
Vacationers have been coming to the 1000 Islands for more than 150 years to enjoy its breathtaking beauty. Waters that were once patrolled by pirates (yes … pirates!) and Prohibition bootleggers are now cruised by cottagers who enjoy serene bays and vacationers who tour aboard guided trips and hear the astonishing stories behind the islands.
A fashionable retreat for the elite in the late 19th century, today the area is a hub for outdoor activities. It is home to elaborate island mansions like the German-style Boldt Castle on Heart Island, and Singer Castle on Dark Island, with its Gothic windows and secret passageways.
Lighthouses, historic castles, maritime museums, world-class fishing and diving, quaint downtown shopping, on-the-water dining, family amusements and more make the 1000 Islands a destination that visitors come to again and again.
No visit to Eastern Ontario would be complete without a cruise to the world famous Thousand Islands.
Depart at 12.30 pm from Brockville's historic waterfront on a relaxing 3 hour ‘Lunch’ Cruise aboard one of the modern, twin-decked, Transport Canada certified vessels equipped with on-board restrooms.
Enjoy a delightful buffet or three-course meal, with live music & entertainment on the panoramic second deck of the Island Queen, or from the glass-topped Island Star, as you pass by palatial waterfront mansions, quaint island cottages, fairy-tale castles, lighthouses, wildlife & many natural wonders of the 1000 Islands, accompanied by true tales of pirates, bootleggers and the Gilded Age rich & famous who all spent time here. Sail in the shadows of ships from around the world plying the main shipping channel of the St. Lawrence Seaway.
Get close to nature as you glide through narrow, scenic channels while the Captain’s commentary provides an accurate account of the Islands history, its legends & its people.
After disembarking, if time (& the Tour-guide) permits, explore Brockville’s many historical treasures with a visit to the Brockville Museum, Fulford Place, Canada’s First Railway Tunnel & Fort Wellington. Or take a stroll through the historic downtown where you’ll discover an abundance of architectural treasures of this one-time Millionaire’s capital of Canada.
End the visit by picking up a memento of your visit in the 1000 Islands at the Chandlery Gift Shop.
Hop on the bus & continue on to Ottawa, driving through rolling farmland, following the rivers & lakes of the Rideau waterway.
Welcome to Ottawa - Canada’s capital, in the east of southern Ontario, near the city of Montreal and the U.S. border. Descriptions of Ottawa read like an appealing dating profile: dynamic, gregarious, bilingual, likes kids & long walks on the river. In person, the attractive capital fits the bill.
Sitting on the Ottawa River, Canada's gargantuan Gothic Parliament buildings regally anchor the downtown core, an inspiring jumble of pulsing districts around the Rideau Canal.
With grand Victorian architecture & world-class Museums like the National Gallery of Canada, are architecturally inspiring homes to a variety of intriguing collections of indigenous & other Canadian art.
Parks, gardens & wide, open public spaces pay an accessible and year-round homage to all four seasons. Average temperatures are well below 0°C from December to March, but locals celebrate the city's longest-seeming season with a bunch of outdoor pursuits. The park-lined Rideau Canal is filled with boats in summer and ice-skaters in winter. Many skate to work or school on the frozen canal, while the Winterlude festival sees fantastical ice sculptures. As spring clicks to summer, auspicious tulips cheer the downtown, followed by vibrant fall leaves that line the streets with eye-popping reds and yellows.
Arrive by early afternoon & Check-in at Four Points Sheraton Gatineau & relax.
Later in the evening, proceed with the Tour-guide to visit the Canadian Museum of History (formerly the Canadian Museum of Civilization), which has been completely renovated in preparation for Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations.
The Museum houses breathtaking exhibitions such as the First People’s Hall, Canada Hall, & Grand Hall housing the world’s largest indoor collection of totem poles. Experience a remarkable journey through one thousand years of Canada’s social history. The museum also boasts a gorgeous view of Parliament Hill & the majestic Parliament Buildings across the Ottawa River.
Come back to the hotel. Overnight. B L
Day 5 - 20 October Friday | OttawavMontreal Drive: 200 km
Morning, meet the Tour-guide at 08.00 am, & embark on a 3 hour sightseeing tour of the nations’ capital.
Get a feel for Ottawa as you pass museums, galleries, public parks, state buildings & more.
See Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, Sussex Drive, residences of the Prime Minister & Governor General of Canada, National Gallery of Canada, Notre Dame Basilica & the Royal Canadian Mint. (from outside only, No Entrances).
Enjoy some time visiting the famous Byward Market, Ottawa’s number one tourist attraction located in the heart of the city. This premier destination for shopping, dining, arts & entertainment is home to both a local farmers’ market & artisans with over 260 stands as well as over 600 businesses including unique boutique shops & restaurants.
Depart Ottawa by 12.00 pm & drive to Montreal, the most populous municipality in the province of Quebec. This dynamic French-English city offers a delicious mix of European and North American art and culture.
Continue on to Montreal, a captivating blend of old and new, with stone-walled taverns, candlelit drinking dens, wild festivals and a cutting-edge arts scene.
Toronto may be Canada’s economic capital, but Montreal remains the country’s cultural juggernaut, with some 250 theater & dance companies, more than 90 festivals and a fascinating medley of neighborhoods where artists, writers & musicians have helped cement the city’s reputation as a great arts center. The Festival International de Jazz de Montreal is the headline event, followed by parties dedicated to world cinema, comedy & gay pride. Quebec City also dazzles, with its grand Winter Carnival, music-filled summer fests & colorful fireworks over the river.
Blessed with one of the most exciting food scenes in North America, Montreal brims with temples dedicated to Kamouraska lamb, Arctic char and, of course, poutine (fries smothered in cheese curds and gravy). You’ll find irresistible patisseries, English pubs, 87-year-old Jewish delis and magnificent food markets reminiscent of Paris. There are hipster bars with tiny bowling alleys & innumerable cafes in which to while away a lazy afternoon. And there are late-night eateries where you can linger over wondrous combinations of food & drink that you will find nowhere else on earth.
Montreal & Quebec City do get some long, cold winters. But the natives have learned to make the best of them, cheering on local hockey legends Les Canadiens de Montreal, tobogganing down snowy slopes, ice skating beside the St Lawrence River & skiing at many fine resorts nearby. If you can’t bear the chill, just wander through Montreal's underground city & surface at the nearest pub.
Montreal is a slice of old Europe in a pie of contemporary design. A day’s wander might take in the photogenic 18th century facades of Old Montreal before a cycling tour of the lovely Canal de Lachine, or a wander through the glittering shops & restaurants of downtown before ending at the inviting terraced cafes of Plateau Mont-Royal. The architectural sweep of the city takes in a wealth of heritage churches such as the breathtaking Basilique Notre-Dame, as well as 20th century icons like the Stade Olympique and Habitat 67. Not to be outshone, Quebec City is a stunning jewel of old-world design, with cobblestone streets, 17th & 18th century stone houses and slender church spires, set on the cliffs above the St Lawrence.
On arrival, Check-in at Best Western Villa Marie.
